Description
Gil Gutiérrez made his Jazz Standard debut in 2017 – and frankly, we were stunned when he virtually sold out every set! In the company of violinist Robert Stern and bassist David Rodriguez, this gifted guitarist and composer now makes a welcome return for two special nights that herald the release of a new CD, Los Bad Hombres. All tracks were cut essentially live and unedited in the studio (including Gil’s interpretations of Monk’s “’Round Midnight” and Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango”) save for the album closer “Camino del Pan Bendito,” recorded during the group’s previous run at Jazz Standard. Born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1962, Gil Gutiérrez has established an avid following throughout Latin America and Spain with his classically–trained mastery of jazz, flamenco, and son cubano. Beginning in 2007, the guitarist performed more than sixty concerts as part of the San Miguel Five, a group led by famed trumpeter Doc Severinsen following his post–“Tonight Show” retirement to Mexico. Gil Gutiérrez has also collaborated with such superstar vocalists as Ana Gabriel and Francisco Céspedes, and with trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.
