WBGO Presents Brunch
Gideon King & City Blog with Special Guests John Scofield and Donny McCaslin

  • Gideon King & City Blog

    Soul Jazz

Gideon King & City Blog (GKCB) is a dynamic New York City-based collective that seamlessly blends soul, pop, jazz, and rock into a sophisticated yet accessible sound. Founded by guitarist, composer, and producer Gideon King, the band emerged in 2015 with their critically acclaimed debut album, City Blog, which earned praise from outlets like the Huffington Post, who dubbed King a “musical genius.” Drawing inspiration from the vibrant streets of his native NYC, King crafts impressionistic songs with complex chord progressions, abstract lyrics, and a fusion of genres reminiscent of Steely Dan, Goose, Stevie Wonder, and Pat Metheny.

Since their inception, GKCB has evolved from a fluid studio project into a tight-knit ensemble, featuring a rotating cast of world-class musicians and vocalists. Their 2018 release, Upscale Madhouse, showcased collaborations with luminaries like John Scofield, Marc Broussard, Grace Weber, and James Genus, further cementing their reputation for eclectic funky creations. This was followed by the 2020 EP Love Knot, a three-song collection that weaves lush arrangements and addictive hooks, and the 2023 EP Splinters, highlighting their creative peak with introspective ballads and funk-driven tracks. In early 2025, GKCB delivered a mesmerizing performance at the Blue Note in NYC alongside jazz icon John Scofield, whose virtuosic guitar work amplified their genre-defying artistry, and recently brought their electrifying sound to the famed 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.

King, a self-taught virtuoso guitarist, leads the group with a vision of “controlled chaos,” where diverse influences and spontaneous improvisation converge. The band’s core lineup includes standout vocalists like Caleb Hawley, Sonny Step, and Ashley Hess, alongside A-list players such as Grammy-nominated drummer Jake Goldbas and bassist Jeff Hanley. Known for their electrifying live shows at iconic venues like Blue Note, City Winery, and the 9:30 Club, GKCB often unleashes jam-band-style performances, weaving extended improvisational passages that showcase their musical prowess and spontaneity. In April 2025, they released “The Thrill Is Gone,” the first single from their anticipated covers album, showcasing their ability to reimagine classics with fresh, soulful flair. With more releases planned, Gideon King & City Blog remains a vital force in the modern music landscape, reflecting the grit and glamour of New York City while resonating with fans of thoughtful, boundary-pushing music.

  • John Scofield

    Jazz

There has been a John Scofield Trio at play since the late 70’s and it undisputedly remains his favorite format. The newest incarnation – Scofield on guitar, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart are having fun. They sail through tightly knit sets that typify the musical diversity that has colored Scofield’s long career: time honored jazz standards, rock and blues classics, savvy original Scofield compositions and whatever assorted off-the-cuff improvisations that turn up on a whim. More than just a collection of tunes, they play music that embodies the spirit that has kept improvisational jazz vigorous and visceral since its start.

Named for the Grateful Dead song that concludes Scofield’s inspired double album, Uncle John’s Band features masterful guitarist John Scofield at his most freewheeling. Scofield says, “All in all it’s a mixed bag of tunes but we treat them equally as vehicles for improvisation - not just covering the songs. It’s challenging. You don’t rely on arrangements as much as the intuitive way we play together. You rely on good playing knowing that there’s no safety net involved. We're three musicians with a special synergy that unfolds between us. I think Trio is always some of my best playing. We hook up as a group and it brings us to satisfying places."
