    Rock & Roll

We are extremely pleased to report that after a nearly five year absence, the great Garland Jeffreys will be returning to Mexicali Live. Born and bred in Brooklyn, singer/songwriter Garland Jeffreys began performing locally in 1966. He performed and recorded with the ‘Grinder’s Switch’ before releasing his self-titled debut album in 1973. That record contained “Wild in the Streets”, which became a mainstay of FM radio. In 1976, GARLAND released his classic “Ghostwriter” collection, a perfected blend of rock, reggae, soul and folk about stark and vivid New York street life, artistic struggle, racial confrontation and conciliation, and whose themes remain current. This album included the strong and accessible songs “Spanish Town”, “I May Not Be Your Kind”, “35 Millimeter Dreams” and the re-released “Wild in the Streets”. As Garland began to achieve a measure of fame in the USA, he built a strong following in Europe and Canada, which continues to this day. His 1992 CD “Don’t Call Me Buckwheat”, was a frank examination of racial issues and was also greeted with overwhelming critical success but did not translate into commensurate American sales. “The King of In Between” was released in 2011 and was Garland’s first new album in 14 years. Ann Powers at The New Republic wrote “This record is as good a classic roots rock record as you’re going to hear from anybody this year. And I don’t care if Bruce Springsteen puts out a record this year; I’m standing by my statement.”  Ben Greenman in The New Yorker wrote that the new album “stays true to what made (Garland’s) reputation in the first place….it’s both humble and defiant, nostalgic and restless.” In 2013, upon turning 70, GARLAND released his latest album of all new material, "Truth Serum". It represented the culmination of a songwriting binge which found Garland using his New York City apartment as a makeshift studio and tracking his own demos on a collection of obsolete mini-cassette tapes. When it came time to turn those demos into an actual album, Jeffrey chose 10 favorites and rallied his bandmates, who nailed the performances in a single take. The result is an album that’s urgent and immediate, yet also filled with seven decades of gritty, street-smart attitude, performed in a myriad of styles. Listen to Garland perform the title track at WFUV and Any Rain.

Garland is widely known for his bravura performance style and ability to get even the most jaded concert goers on their feet. If you have never seen him in concert, this is a rare opportunity. Also check out Garland rocking his classic Mystery Kids.

    Sam and Margot

    Alternative Folk

Sam & Margot decided to form a band based on their mutual appreciation for Conor Oberst, Brechtian Cabaret, fine dining, intense eye contact and aspirations for fame balanced with artistic integrity.  They met at a villa in the mountains of Tuscany but did not begin singing with each other until returning to America.  After Italy Sam spent more time traveling in India, studying Tantrism under a guru and reading lots of postmodern novels.  He returned 20 pounds lighter and with a batch of songs that were heartfelt and poignant. Margot felt connected to the material and they began singing and writing together.  Sam & Margot began to book gigs and record some of their music and eventually caught the eye of one of their idols, Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers,) who offered to produce their songs.

Sam & Margot’s music covers the plethora of the American experience.  With a similar sound to Best Coast, The Lumineers and Bright Eyes, their story telling captures the human experience and all complications within it.  They have been featured on Radio Woodstock WDST, played Rockwood Music Hall, The Bitter End, Ella Lounge, and have an upcoming show at Webster Hall.
