Description
The Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center is a nonprofit organization providing quality performing arts instruction to underserved students in South Los Angeles. The teachers provide a program filled with structure and a well-planned curriculum to help their students build self-esteem, develop civic responsibility, and learn to apply this same dedication and commitment to their academics. Pullum Center serves all students with a desire to learn and develop their talent. Each year, the Pullum Center provides free instruction and an enriching environment to more than 600 students, ages 5 to 20. This evening, their big band will be performing. The band is composed of students from South Central and Compton, the youngest of which is 11 years old. The band has recently performed with Aloe Blacc, opened for Earth, Wind, and Fire, and performed in a master class with Arturo Sandoval. These kids have dedicated their lives to uplifting the community. They play at convalescence homes, feed the homeless, and participate in countless community events.

Performing Arts assist in children’s development and enriches the lives of the community. A 2005 Harris poll revealed that 93% of the public believes that arts, including theater, are vital to a well-rounded education. Yet, many local public schools offer little to no performing arts programs. Arts instruction has been proven to:
Improve school attendance
Reduce High School drop-outs
Raise test scores
Improve reading and communication skills – verbal and non-verbal
