Description
Facing West is a modern post-bop quartet featuring saxophonists Donnie Norton and Doug Stone, bassist Braun Khan, and drummer Brian Claxton. All four members, although close friends, reside in different parts of the country and are all active performers and university jazz educators. With an emphasis on original compositions, the group pulls inspiration from many of the greatest bands of the jazz canon. You can expect to hear joyful expression, exhilarating interplay, and all four musicians having a ton of fun.

Award-winning drummer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Claxton is known for his electrifying groove and rhythmic mastery. An old soul and passionate student of the history of American music, Claxton has navigated a career with one foot in the past and one foot in the future, and has a musical voice that is as diverse as his performance experience. Claxton teaches at the University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. He recently released his first record as a leader When I Get Home featuring Tamir Hendelman, Graham Dechter, Jon Hamar, and was produced by Jeff Hamilton.

Don Norton is an assistant professor of music and director of jazz studies at the University of Portland. As a saxophonist, he has performed extensively in a variety of styles that include jazz, classical, world music, and musical theatre, and he has performed throughout the United States and abroad, including a tour of Costa Rica with world music group Panoramic. His research interests include jazz history and pedagogical methods for jazz and saxophone performance, and he has presented research at conferences of the Jazz Education Network and the North American Saxophone Alliance. Don previously taught at Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota State University-Mankato, Spoon River College, and Laramie County Community College, and he served as a graduate assistant in the Jazz Studies Department at the University of Northern Colorado. Additionally, he has taught at the Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts, as well as the summer jazz camps of Northern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, and the Birch Creek Music Performance Center. He is also a clinician with the Vandoren Regional Artist program.

Doug Stone is assistant professor of jazz studies at Louisiana State University. He performs in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and throughout Southeastern Louisiana with the likes of Stephanie Jordan, the John Mahoney Big Band, Reid Poole's Boppin' Five, and the Florida Street Blowhards. He lived in Rochester, New York, for several years where he worked with Gap Mangione, Rich Thompson, Bob Sneider, George Caldwell, Bobby Militello and other Upstate New York musicians. Doug also taught at the Rochester School of the Arts and the Eastman Community Music School. Doug began his career in Illinois and was active in the Chicago jazz scene for many years. He also spent time on the road with Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop Nouveau. His most recent recording is entitled "Motion" on the Outside in Music label. Check him out at dougstonejazz.com

Braun Khan is Assistant Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at Utah State University. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in bass performance from Central Michigan University, and a Doctor of Arts in Jazz Studies and Bass Performance from the University of Northern Colorado. He has also taught since 2013 on the JamPlay Online Instructional Website, one of the largest online instructional sites in the world, and in the summer teaches at the Rocky Ridge Music Center jazz camp in Estes Park, Colorado. He is the recipient of several DownBeat awards for Best College Big Band as bassist with UNC's Jazz Lab I, Outstanding Vocal Jazz Ensemble as a vocalist with UNC's Vocal Lab, and for Outstanding Small Ensemble Composition for his original composition Airplanes. An active performer, he has extensive experience as a professional bassist in jazz, classical and various other musical styles, including performances with Howard Levy, Jeff Hamilton, the New York Voices, Greg Gisbert, Jake Shimabukuro, Groove For Thought, Clint de Ganon, Bob Christianson, and Clifford Carter, and performances on electric bass and jazz bass with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
