Guitarist and composer Eric Hofbauer celebrates the release of Tongues / Hope Language, a concept double album from his new ensemble EHX, at the Regattabar on April 9. EHX is Hofbauer’s most personal project to date — a fluid sextet that moves freely from string trio to full band orchestration, performing a “Gen X post-style” repertoire drawn entirely from music that has shaped his life. Björk, Radiohead, and Sigur Rós sit alongside Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, connected to deeper jazz cuts by Abbey Lincoln and Eddie Harris. The two-disc album explores the sacred power of storytelling: Tongues examines the act of communication — direct, sardonic, and political; Hope Language turns toward reflection, resistance, and a hard-won hope in humanity. “These songs are the soundtrack of my life so far,” Hofbauer says, “and EHX is the dream project I’ve been waiting for.”
