Elena Pinderhughes
Jazz
Hailed by The Guardian as “the most exciting and creatively assured jazz flutist to have emerged in years,” Elena Pinderhughes has a distinctive voice that’s expanding jazz's emotional range. Her work channels something rarely articulated in the genre: music that feels both tender and sensual, mysterious and direct, grounded in feminine creative vision without apology. After a decade as one of the most sought-after collaborators across genres, the flutist-composer-vocalist is stepping out as a bandleader. Her instrumental debut, arriving in fall 2026, marks the full emergence of an artist who has spent years elevating groundbreaking projects while quietly developing her own creative philosophy.
The breadth of Pinderhughes' collaborations spans the full spectrum of contemporary music: touring with Herbie Hancock and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, performing at Coachella with Future and Metro Boomin, appearing on recordings by Ambrose Akinmusire, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding, Terrace Martin, and Common. Her contributions extend into R&B through projects with Victoria Monét, Giveon, and Cynthia Erivo. In film, as part of Laura Karpman's composing studio, she contributed to the Academy Award-nominated score for American Fiction and HBO's Duster. These experiences became the foundation for an artistic approach that moves between worlds without compromising authenticity, honoring tradition while pushing beyond its boundaries.
Raised in the Bay Area's progressive cultural landscape and trained at Manhattan School of Music, Pinderhughes has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the White House, and major jazz festivals from Newport and Monterey to Montreal and Montreux. She developed a sound rooted in jazz tradition but unafraid of its evolution, with playing that is enigmatic yet warm, technical yet emotionally transparent. The New York Times called it "boppish fluency but a relaxed sense of phrase," while composer Nicole Mitchell notes that her work “catalyzes tears and joy”.
As bandleader, Pinderhughes now channels this breadth into her own music with an unguarded, deeply personal voice that few on her instrument have dared to show.
