Description
An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B–3 organ for over five decades, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been featured on over 70 albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of jazz, blues and R&B legends. Smith’s career took off when he joined George Benson’s group in the early ‘60s; that led to Lonnie’s first album as a leader (Finger Lickin’ Good, released 1966 on Columbia), his affiliation with saxophonist Lou Donaldson, and his signing to Blue Note Records. As a leader, Lonnie Smith released such soul jazz classics as Think!,Turning Point, Move Your Hand, and Drives; post–Blue Note, he remained a consistent presence on the national jazz charts with his albums for Kudu, Groove Merchant, T.K., Scufflin’, Criss Cross and Palmetto. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste insures that no genre is safe: The Doctor has recorded everything from covers of the Beatles, the Stylistics and the Eurythmics to tributes to Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Beck, leading ensembles that range from his tight–knit working trio to a fifteen–piece big band. “The Doctor is in”at Jazz Standard – make your reservations now!

Dr. Lonnie Smith, who celebrated his 70th birthday on our stage in 2012, shows no sign of slowing down creatively or resting on his impressive laurels. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B–3 organ for over five decades, the good Doctor has been featured on over seventy albums (his Columbia debut Finger Lickin’ Good appeared in 1966) and has recorded and performed with many of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B performers in music history. In 2012, Dr. Lonnie Smith launched his own recording and production company, Pilgrimage Productions, to release The Healer, a blazing live trio date including “Mellow Mood,” “Dapper Dan,” and his passionate interpretation of Billy Strayhorn’s classic “Chelsea Bridge.”
