The wizard of the Hammond B–3 has appeared on our stage many times with different musical configu-rations. But his week marks a special occasion as we celebrate the Blue Note Records release of a new album recorded live at Jazz Standard by Dr. Lonnie Smith and his superb trio, featuring guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Johnathan Blake. This NEA “Jazz Master” began his career in Buffalo, New York, and went on to release a series of Blue Note soul jazz classics including Think! and Move Your Hand. Smith recorded for other imprints (including his own Pilgrimage label) at the helm of trios, octets, and big bands; A Tribe Called Quest, Wu–Tang Clan, and United Future Organization are just a few of the hip–hop hit–makers who’ve sampled his music.
