Growing up in the tiny town of Bellevue, Ohio, Jo Ochenduski—who records under the name songstress jo—was an artsy and creative kid who gravitated toward music. “I've always just known that music was the thing I wanted to do,” Ochenduski says. That self-assurance permeates the music songstress jo has released to date, including 2021's butterfly soul EP and the 2022 singles "circus” and “bitchcraft.” The music encompasses many styles, including stripped-down folk, laid-back trip-hop, low-lit R&B, and pop balladry. As a vocalist, jo slips between moods and expressions with ease, with a tone that's empathetic and expressive.
Over the years, jo started to find their voice as a songwriter, first by writing poems and short stories and then branching out into lyrics. "I consider myself a creative and a lyricist first," they say. “I feel like as a songwriter, and as an individual, it is my job to let people know that we as humans are allowed to grow and change and be who we are—unapologetically—all the time."
Taking the personal and making it universal—or putting a twist on a common theme—is a lesson she took from two of her favorite artists, twenty one pilots and Melanie Martinez. Accordingly, Ochenduski hopes the personal nature of songstress jo’s music also resonates with people on a deeper level.
