    Rock

DISTRICT 97 is undoubtedly the most musically-adventurous rock band in the world to feature an American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist. Since 2008, this quintet from Chicago has melded an adventurous, uncompromising instrumental prowess with the look, sound, and stage presence of vocalist Leslie Hunt. Through world tours and a stream of studio and live releases, the band has garnered a worldwide fanbase; collaborating with iconic singer/bassist John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia, UK) and drawing praise from Bill Bruford (drummer of Yes/King Crimson/Genesis), Mike Portnoy (drummer of Dream Theater/Transatlantic) and other rock luminaries along the way. Their new album Screens and its accompanying live show are their most ambitious efforts to date

    Andreas Kapsalis

    Guitar Virtuoso

Andreas Kapsalis is a Greek-American guitarist and composer born in the suburbs of Chicago. His first exposure to music was through his mother, Frances Kapsalis, a student of opera, and his father, Peter Kapsalis, a violinist. Andreas began teaching himself guitar at the age of 11, reading and writing music as well as music theory.

At the age of 18 he suffered a hand injury; during his recovery period, he began developing his 10-finger tapping techniques. Under the tutelage of composer and producer Jim Tullio, a student of Aaron Copland, he refined his compositional approach on the guitar using these techniques. Tullio produced Andreas' first EP with Andreas' arrangement of Dave Brubeck's composition “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” which garnered attention from the composer himself, who said, “I am very impressed that Andreas could cover on guitar what I had written for piano. It is quite amazing to hear my own music performed by great instrumentalists.”

Andreas began performing nationally with the Andreas Kapsalis Trio and recorded two discs featuring his compositions.

While performing in Los Angeles he was invited to apply for the Sundance Composers Labs. He was awarded the fellowship, an honor awarded to only six composers a year. This was his initiation into film composing.

At the end of the Sundance Composers Lab Andreas was invited by the directors to complete a score for their documentary film “Black Gold” among the documentaries selected for the January premier at the Sundance Film Festival. Founder of the Sundance Institute and Festival, Robert Redford, noted this was the first time in Sundance Institute history that documentary fellows and a composer fellow had an “official selection” at the Sundance Film Festival. Andreas subsequently composed scores for several documentary and feature films such as “Pig Business” and “Mulberry Street.” Andreas has also been commissioned by Northwestern University and Notre Dame to compose music for their silent film festivals.

Following this, Andreas performed and recorded several discs with Polish singer/contra bassist Megitza and with the AKGI duo.

Andreas has also been performing internationally, solo and in various ensembles, for festivals and concert series in North America, Europe, and Asia, such as Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Calcutta Guitar Festival in India, the Canadian Guitar Festival, and the Guitar Festival in the Philippines. In addition, concerts have taken place in Germany, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia. More recently Andreas was invited to Armenia to participate in "Sounds of Peace," a musical exchange featuring 60 artists from 10 different countries. Along with his years of experience as a touring musician he has also enjoyed teaching guitar, conducting masterclasses as well as private instruction in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

In 2015 Andreas completed the first solo album of his career, “Anastasi,” which features original compositions written for ten-finger-tapping style guitar. He then toured extensively throughout the

U.S. and Europe to promote the release of this CD. In the fall of 2015 he recorded a live CD in his home town of Chicago. The LP, entitled “Andreas Kapsalis Live at the Old Town School of Folk Music,” was released in 2016. Andreas again toured the U.S. and Europe to promote this CD.

Andreas' third solo CD, “Tributes,” was released in early 2019. This is a covers record featuring his arrangements of songs from some of his favorite artists who have influenced him as a guitarist throughout the years. He has been touring Switzerland and the U.S. in his 2019 CD Release Tour.

Andreas continues to be inspired and is eager to share the beauty of music and how it can enrich one's life.

“Threnodia,” composed and played by Andreas Kapsalis, features the “Kapsalis Tremelo,” a plucking/tremolo technique he created to allow for independant melodic movement using the right hand while plucking the harmony fingered in the left hand simultaneously.

Threnodia means Lamenting song and is deticated to Peter Kapsalis, Andreas' father, who was a violinist and the inspiration for the composition. Andreas created the “Kapsalis Tremelo” trying to simulate the tremolo of a violin section in an orchestra with his right hand. He stumbled onto this technique while originally working on an arrangement of Barber’s “Adagio for strings.”
