Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo (pronounced “fig-a-ray-doe”) releases his sixth album on Arbors Records, “I Love Samba” in August 2024. This brilliant new album from this masterfully creative guitarist, features two legendary Brazilian musicians, Nilson Matt on bass, and Dudaka da Fonseca on drums, both of Trio da Paz fame. Additionally, new flute sensation Itai Kriss, from Israel, joins the group on several songs.
The album was engineered by legendary engineer, Jay Messina, who has engineered hundreds of significant albums for John Lennon, Miles Davis, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, The Blues Brothers, Peter Frampton, Eddie Palmieri, and more.
The album features all new compositions by Diego.
Diego Figueiredo lives in, with, and for the music. Some people are simply meant to be musicians. Diego is one. He was born in 1980 in Franca, São Paulo State, and began playing music at four years old. By the age of twelve he had already attracted a local following, and when he was fifteen, he was drawing huge crowds around Brazil. Now, in 2022, he has conquered the world. Diego has recorded over two dozen albums, both solo and in collaboration with others, and constantly tours all over the globe. He can no longer be downplayed as a “rising star” among the world’s great (jazz) guitarists – he is now inarguably among the established elite. His skills on his instrument are matched only by his ability to move freely between styles, and his sublime technique is paired with an exquisite ability to vary his playing so that it radiates with unwavering excitement. His expressive voice on the acoustic guitar draws inspiration from his home country’s rich musical heritage, but he also has a deep knowledge and sense of jazz’s quirkiness as well as the classic guitar tradition. Diego Figueiredo can play whatever he desires.
Diego has released 30 CDs between his releases in Brazil, the European label Stunt Records, and now six albums on Arbors Records. He has played in more than 60 countries. He is the winner of several important competitions including The Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition, and Brazil’s VISA Prize.
Diego has recorded and performed with Brazil’s biggest stars including Gilberto Gil, João Bosco, Roberto Menescal, Toquinho, Fafá de Belém, Angela Maria, Toninho Horta, and several years touring the world accompanying Brazil’s beloved composer and vocalist, Belchior.
For the last twelve years, Diego has spent large swarths of time in North America, performing solo and in duos and trios with the likes of Larry Coryell, Ken Peplowski, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Chuchito Valdes, Stanley Jordan and Cyrille Aimée.
Diego and Cyrille Aimée toured heavily together from 2011 – 2015. Each artist has guested several times on each other’s albums, culminating in Cyrille’s 2019 Sondheim inspired album, “Move On”, which earned each of them an official Grammy Nomination for “Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals”.
George Benson says “Diego is one of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen in my whole life.”
Guitar World Magazine wrote about a recent live performance, “Next up was a true virtuoso, jazz guitarist Diego Figueiredo. Yes, we were all mesmerized by his amazing head of hair. But it was his incredibly fluid and natural performance style, his sense of true enjoyment as he dazzled us and his good-natured entertaining approach that truly grabbed us. Wow. I don’t even know what else to say. Seemingly effortless and thoroughly fabulous.”
Diego’s fifth album on Arbors Records, “My World” (June 2023), hit #8 on the JazzWeek charts, spent 22 weeks in the Top 50, and was the 30th most played album for all of 2023. The album featured bassist Nilson Matta, drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, and pianist Helio Alves, along with two guest appearances from Ken Peplowski on clarinet and tenor sax, and trumpeter Nicholas Payton. Legendary jazz critic Scott Yanow, writes in the liner notes “Diego has the rare ability of making everything sound beautiful.”
Diego has also released four records on the Danish label, Stunt Records, including “Broken Bossa” (2015), and “Come Closer” (2019), which was a guitar/vocal album featuring four songs with Cyrille Aimée, four songs with legendary Manhattan Transfer vocalist Janis Siegel, and two songs with Italian jazz singer Chiarra Izzi.
The American dream came true for Catalina Popescu in October of 1986 when she and her husband Bob created a supper club devoted to serving an experience of superb eats and the shared magic of live performance. That grand experience began at the door where every night her mother Maria would greet each guest as family and share in their love of music. Housed in Hollywood and decked out in a timeless charm, the club offers a cozy ambience under sparkling stage lights garnished with its signature concoction — Jazz. The first artist to grace the stage was the masterful flutist and saxophonist Buddy Collette, and ever since then, over the past 36 years, the Catalina Jazz Club has hosted the most illustrious legends of all time — from the powerful puffers of Dizzy Gillespie to the electrified fingers of McCoy Tyner, the bubbly belt of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Lynda Carter, the flirtatious saxophone of Joshua Redman, the slick strumming of Kenny Burrell, the insane drum clinic of Steve Gadd, the romance of Steve Tyrell, and the masterclass of Mike Stern.
For Catalina, Jazz is our way of life. It breathes pain. It knows love. It dreams hope. It bleeds courage. Whether we’re showcasing Broadway, Soul, R&B, or stand-up comedy, the lesson learned from all the greats who have serenaded our spirits is how to connect to one another. And that’s why the Catalina Jazz Club will always have a table ready for you.
The Catalina Jazz Club has been honored by A.S.M.A.C., California Jazz Foundation, Los Angeles Jazz Society, and a City of Los Angeles Certificate of Appreciation on their 25th Anniversary, which was awarded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LA City Council which included then City Council member and current Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
