*Happy Hour Free Concert Series* featuring Dewey Sampson Quartet   Dewey Sampson began his musical journey with classical violin before teaching himself bass in high school. He fell in love with jazz while attending Jackson State University, soaking up records and live music in clubs. His first professional gig came around 1960 in Jackson, Mississippi. After earning a music degree and serving in the military—where he connected with jazz musicians in Germany—he spent 16 years in Atlanta, performing with jazz greats like James Moody, Freddy Cole, and Duke Pearson. A planned move to New York in 1988 was detoured when a visit to family in New Orleans turned into a long-term stay, where he played with Teddy Riley, Phamous Lambert, and Ellis Marsalis. Known for his versatility, Sampson easily shifts between traditional and modern jazz. He later lived in Belgium and Burundi before returning to New Orleans, where he now gigs regularly and remains dedicated to teaching. As he puts it, “To play music is a joy in itself. It’s the freedom to express yourself.
