Platinum recording artist John Anthony Yanez aka Devour has made a name for himself in the rap game by independently overcoming all obstacles that have stood in his way throughout life.
Being the youngest boy of 15 brothers and sisters he was raised by his mom and grew up in the projects of East LA. After being kicked out of their home they bounced around until finally settling in North Hollywood and his life in the 818 started unfolding. His upbringing in both cities and life experiences is what sculpted him to who he is today. Growing up with such a big family he was able to experience different generations of music through each of his older brothers and enjoyed the versatility of so many different genres.
By the time Devour was a teenager he knew music was what he wanted to do and started doing anything he could to raise the money to get the equipment needed to put together a studio in his room. Having no help or direction in even making a song he felt his craft wasn’t where he wanted it to be yet but he caught a case at 16 and was facing 10 years. Not knowing what the future held he hesitantly released his first song that year in 2009.
Although many would describe his sound as different or unique he approaches it as universal and genuine. “Those two words best describe my sound because my sound is built off my life experiences and no matter the ethnicity, age, or color, every time I pour my inner self into lyric form and place them over any type of beat it is embraced, appreciated and loved by all,” says Devour. As he continued to release music Devour continued to break down barriers and independently and single handedly impact the music scene. In 2017 he released “Bout Me” which went gold in 2023 and platinum this year.
Through the trials and tribulations of life and with his career at an all time high Devour was facing a murder charge and his music career was put on pause and he served time until his release in late 2023. In 2024 Devour came home and sold out his LA headline show and this year was one of the headliners on the Dusse stage at Rolling Loud LA. Devour is back and with more music on the way and with plans to tour across the US this summer.
