Jazz
Jazz pianist and composer, David Janeway, grew up in Detroit in the early sixties and was heavily influenced by Motown and local jazz musicians such as Marcus Belgrave and Harold McKinney before moving to New York City in 1978. Janeway studied with the late Albert Dailey and performed with many Latin-Jazz and mainstream jazz artists during this period including The Supremes, Art Farmer, Angel Canales and Sabor, Michal Urbaniak, Jr. Cook, Sonny Fortune, Tom Harrell, Valery Ponomarev, Dakota Staton, Eliot Zigmund and many others. He recorded his first LP/CD as a leader, “Entry Point (New Direction, 1986), which featured Bob Berg, Marcus Belgrave, Steve Berrios and Lee Smith. In the early nineties he recorded “Inside Out “on Timeless Records (SJP 402), his second as a leader which featured Sonny Fortune and Billy Hart. "Interchange" recorded in 1993, is Janeway's first trio album (Steeplechase SCCD33150) and features Harvie S and Steve Johns. “Excursion” (New Direction, 2004) features Janeway in a trio setting with Harvie S and Steve Davis. Janeway recorded, “Shadow Dances” with the Hastings Jazz Collective; a group he established in 2008 that features Tim Armacost, Jay Azzolina, Harvie S and Ron Vincent. His widely acclaimed recent trio CDs, “Distant Voices” and "Forward Motion" on Steeplechase Records, features his working trio with Cameron Brown on bass and Billy Hart on drums. His newest CD released on 5/8/26, "Live at Blue Llama" also on Steeplechase, captures Janeway at Ann Arbor's premiere jazz club with Billy Hart and Robert Hurst. Janeway has performed extensively in the NYC club scene from the late 70s to the present both as a leader and sideman at Sweet Basil, Birdland, Visiones, Zanzibar, Jazz Forum, Maureen’s, Smalls and Mezzrow as well as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Madison Square Garden for the 1980 Salsa Festival, the Village Gate for the Salsa Meets Jazz series and other clubs and venues throughout the US and Europe. REVIEWS: Referring to Janeway’s latest trio release, “Distant Voices” on Steeplechase: “This is an excellent recording, and the more you listen, the more compelling the music becomes. This could easily be one of the Top Ten Jazz CD’s of 2021, and maybe one for the ages.”Michael Nastos: SEMJA Update, Hot House, WCBN, Ann Arbor, MI “A skilled composer and pianist capable of creating music that is imaginative, sensitive, and often exciting.” David Franklin, Cadence “….welcome your ears to David Janeway. You’ll enjoy this new recording talent.” Sid Gribetz, WKCR, Jazz Times “This is pleasant contemporary jazz that is easy to enjoy.” Michael Nastos, The Ann Arbor News “It is no small feat to say that not only is Janeway’s playing sparkling but so is his ability to write tuneful compositions.” Michael P. Gladstone, All About Jazz Review “David Janeway is an extra ordinary pianist with great facility and wealth of ideas. Hi exhibits maturity and depth in his playing. He has most definitely “ARRIVED”. Eddie Henderson “Janeway is not afraid to experiment in the moment and has a range of technique that allows him to test the waters fearlessly…he is constantly evolving, and I have never heard one player have so many different ways of texturizing.” Monique Avakian, The Patch Learn more at DavidJaneway.com, follow on Facebook at Facebook.com/David.Janeway.5, davidjanewaypiano on Instagram, DavidJanewayJazz on Youtube, Spotify, Amazon and Apple Music.
