David Binney’s sharp-edged compositions meet Louis Cole’s explosive drumming and Pera Krstajic’s electric low-end force—thrilling modern jazz at high voltage.
David Binney stands as one of the most prolific and influential voices in contemporary jazz. He has released over 30 albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings, earning recognition from JazzTimes as a creator of “an alternative jazz scene.” His latest project, Action Trio, features Grammy Award–winning drummer and bandleader Louis Cole alongside bassist Pera Krstajic, bringing together three singular voices in modern music.
Born in Miami, raised in Southern California, shaped in New York City, and now based in Los Angeles, Binney’s career reflects a uniquely global and forward-thinking perspective. He has performed and recorded with an extraordinary range of artists, including Gil Evans, Norah Jones, Chris Potter, Aretha Franklin, Jamiroquai, and Maceo Parker, and was a key creative force behind the ensemble featured on David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar.
A three-time winner of the DownBeat Critics’ Poll for Alto Saxophone, Binney has been featured on the covers of DownBeat and JazzTimes, in The New York Times Arts section, and in numerous international publications. Beyond performance, he is a deeply respected educator, serving on faculty at The New School in New York City and teaching at leading institutions including USC, CalArts, NYU, Manhattan School of Music, and internationally at the Paris Conservatoire, Rotterdam Conservatory, Amsterdam Conservatory, and beyond.
Binney’s instantly recognizable saxophone sound and innovative compositions have resonated everywhere from intimate basement clubs to major jazz festivals across Europe and the world, continuing to redefine the language and future of jazz.
“A strikingly original composer, leader, conceptualist.” — DownBeat Magazine
“David Binney possesses one of the most original minds in contemporary music.” — Stereophile
“Add David Binney’s dynamic voice on saxophone and his great writing to the chorus of creators re-invigorating jazz.” — The Montreal Gazette
