This Vancouver–born, Brooklyn–based composer and bandleader has toured the world with his 18–piece ensemble, Secret Society, garnering countless awards and nominations and reimagining what a 21st–century big band can sound like. The band’s 2016 album Real Enemies, released in the fall of 2016, earned a third consecutive GRAMMY Award nomination for its creator and was praised as “a work of furious ambition…deeply in tune with our present moment” by The New York Times’ Nate Chinen. Most recently, the Secret Society has been performing new DJA compositions inspired by his mentor Bob Brookmeyer (1929–1911), including “Wingèd Beasts,” a piece commissioned by the New England Conservatory in honor of its 150th anniversary. Darcy James Argue & Secret Society play “maximalist music of impressive complexity and immense entertainment value, in your face and then in your head.” (Richard Gehr, The Village Voice) Don’t miss them!

Vancouver–born, Brooklyn–based composer/bandleader Darcy James Argue and his 18–piece ensemble are in the never–ending process of reimagining what a 21st–century big band can sound like. Along the way, this nonpareil aggregation has garnered countless awards and a thick folio of rave reviews, like Richard Gehr in The Village Voice praising “maximalist music of impressive complexity and immense entertainment value, in your face and then in your head.” The Secret Society topped the Big Band category in the 2015 DownBeat Critics Poll, propelled by live performances celebrated for their “slashing fury and awesome full–ensemble precision” (The New York City Jazz Record), “brilliant soundscapes” (Toronto Globe and Mail) and “gorgeous musical details, maneuvers and transformations” (Ottawa Citizen). Jazz Standard is thrilled to welcome back Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society for one very special night – make your reservations now!
