Description
Since arriving in the U.S. from Cuba in 1999, Dafnis Prieto has honed his vibrant, forward-looking musical vision across a range of styles and formats. In the process, he has become known as much for his composing and arranging skills as for his electrifying drumming, displaying a range of musical vocabularies from Latin jazz to classical chamber music.
In August 2017, Prieto, a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, premiered his Dafnis Prieto Big Band at Jazz Standard — the band's debut album, Back to the Sunset, went on to earn the 2018 GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz Album and was called by DownBeat "one of the best recordings of the year." A collaborator with musical giants including Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo, and Henry Threadgill, among others, Prieto returns as a bandleader to Jazz Standard to premiere brand new music for his fearless Dafnis Prieto Sextet.
Featuring a top-shelf lineup, the Sextet prepares to enter the studio to record its third album, Transparency, following up on 2008's Taking the Soul for a Walk and 2015's Triangles and Circles. This new set of compositions embraces, in Prieto's words, "transparent ideas, communication, and relationships" in music and life, valuing clarity of intention and celebrating moments fleeting and fragile, simple and beautiful. Join Prieto and his Sextet as they launch this major new project.
