On April 6, 2018, Dafnis Prieto – drummer, composer, bandleader, and 2011 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow – celebrated the tenth anniversary of his independent Dafnison Music imprint with the release of Back To The Sunset, the debut album by the Dafnis Prieto Big Band. The DPBB made its world premiere on our stage over three exhilarating nights in August 2017; immediately following this engagement, the band went into sessions at Systems Two Recording in Brooklyn, joined by special guests Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman, and Brian Lynch. Prieto composed and arranged nine works for Back To The Sunset: The result is a splendid showcase for his talents as a composer/arranger and a glowing tribute to such musical heroes and mentors as Eddie Palmieri, Chico O'Farrill, Bebo Valdés, Jane Bunnett, and Michel Camilo. Of his seventh recording as a leader, Dafnis Prieto says: “This is a journey in time, looking back and remembering the way up to now, with gratitude and joy.
