CumbiaSazo, Chicago's sporadic & nomadic Cumbia & Tropical Bass party, is planning to throw just 4 blowout parties this spring & summer. Organizers have wanted each gathering to be unique in it's own way with regards to music, venue & atmosphere, and after the last surprisingly insane event at Double Door weren't sure it could out done (or so it's been said). The crew is so happy that the newly renovated Thalia Hall in CumbiaSazo’s home neighborhood of Pilsen will be re-launching and opening it’s doors to the CumbiaSazo dance party where artists will be connecting the dots between vintage & electronic rhythms of Latin America and celebrating the backbone rhythm of cumbia alongside other worldly & bass-heavy music of the peoples. After three years underground, the party has re-surfaced with the warm weather to further introduce Chicago to the Latin underground sound and will be joined by visual artists in touring Chicago neighborhoods for a ‘Verano de Cumbia’.
Featured at the Thalia Hall/Pilsen homecoming will be a live set by Chicago’s LOS VICIOS DE PAPA, a Latin Ska + Cumbia outfit with strong roots in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Los Vicios de Papá is a high energy internationally-rooted band with socially conscious lyrics stemming from their struggling and undocumented youth experience. LVDP’s sound started with a passion for ska/reggae and has evolved into an 8 piece band that arranges Cumbia, Dancehall, Huapachon, Hip Hop, Reggae and Ska creating an intoxicating mix that ignites partygoers into a dance-frenzy at all costs.
The dance party is a coming together of sorts for Chicago’s Latin/alternative-minded DJ crews & bands (full lineup TBA) who gather sporadically for this special event and May 31st in particular will welcoming Mexico’s DJ JAVIER ESTRADA for a featured set.
Born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Javier Estrada has been recognized as a groundbreaking DJ & producer within the global & tropical bass scene and worldwide coupled with recognition from labels like Mad Decent, TropicAll, and Generation Bass with whom he’s collaborated on mixtapes & productions.
DJ Javier Estrada has been featured at acclaimed Latin American festivals such as Festival NRMAL, Festival Marvin, and the venerable Vive Latino Festival, and his music’s indigenous roots combined with technical skill and a sense of playfulness have allowed him to fuse foundations from Hip Hop to Cumbia and Moombahton to Tribal Step to create a sound utterly danceable and liberating for Latinos and beyond.
Part of the event’s proceeds will benefit local non-profit and community/arts-oriented organizations.
