    Crowbar

    Heavy Metal

Starting in 1989 and taking its name from the Crowbar group in NOLA (New Orleans), Kirk Windstein went on to pioneer slow and heavy music with a unique vocal style. Their first album, Obedience Thru Sufferingwas released in 1991, but failed to achieve notoriety. By 1993’s self-titled Crowbar album, personal friendPhil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, and Superjoint Ritual among others) produced the record, which eventually led to national promotion on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. Phil sang back up on a few tracks and sang background on “Broken Glass” which rounded out the anthems “All I Had (I Gave),” “I Have Failed” and “Existence is Punishment” along with a new take on the Led Zeppelin song “No Quarter.” Following their success the band went on to record music videos, major tours with Pantera, and more albums. Their band stage antics became infamous, which led to being immortalized in the Pantera “Home Video 3” and Crowbar’s “Like Broken” Home Video.

As time moved on the band lost its founding members with the exception of vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein. After Todd Strange left the band, the trademark 300-pound-plus band members slimmed down. The band continues to perform, borrowing members from NOLA metal bands like Goatwhore and Acid Bath. In their recent 2005 release, Lifesblood for the Downtrodden, Pantera bassist rex brown lent his bass duties and keyboard playing and Down’s producer Warren Riker.

    Tombs

    Heavy Metal

Tombs front-man Mike Hill is not a man interested in appeasing his existing audience or modifying the music he makes in the hope of luring in a broader one. Letting the songs come as and when inspiration hits him is integral to Hill's process, and this accounts in part for The Grand Annihilation's diversity. The blasting, scathing yet melodic black metal savagery of opener "Black Sun Horizon" and "Way Of The Storm" are very much built to destroy, while wielding a poignancy that is undeniable - both of which stand in strong contrast to the uncomfortable post-punk squall of "Underneath" that showcases Hill's Nick Cave/Ian Curtis-esque singing voice, while the likes of the throbbing "Saturnalian" and unnerving tribal thunder of "Walk With Me In Nightmares" stand in categories all of their own. While every track on The Grand Annihilation stands separate from those around it, it is still a cohesive collection, and at no point do the stylistic twists and turns undermine its coherence.

"If you've been following Tombs, you probably know to expect the unexpected, and I always strive to present a full range of emotion on everything with the band's name on it," Hill explains. "That said, this is a very dark and introspective record that digs deep into the common ideas of mortality, infinity and cosmic mysteries. The lyrics on the new record are a celebration of freedom through embracing the dark side. Once you realize that you follow the dark path - the path of the individual - there is a certain feeling of liberation that accompanies it."

    Incite

    Heavy Metal

Incite ignite heavy metal once more with their fourth full-length album and highly anticipated metal record for 2016 Oppression [minus HEAD Records]. Since the release of their full-length-debut The Slaughter in 2009, the Phoenix, AZ quartet has shared stages with everyone from Dillinger Escape Plan, Cancer Bats, and 36 Crazyfists to Crowbar, Soulfly, and Cavalera Conspiracy in addition to headlining countless gigs. Over the course of two more explosive offerings, All Out War [2012] and Up In Hell [2014], they’ve earned acclaim from Kerrang!, ARTISTdirect, and many others as well as “Album of the Week” honors from Revolver. Songs such as “Army of Darkness” charted Top 40 on the SiriusXM metal charts. However, 2016 sees the band evolve into a more brutal and brash beast ready to claw its way to the genre’s upper echelon one show at a time.
