What started as a one-off idea that was met with positive response, Prog-jam rock band Concept began as a supergroup assembled for a farewell performance at the Sterling Stage Happy Sterling festival back in 2024. After that debut, there started a fire that didn't exactly fizzle out. What was meant to exist for only a single night quickly took on a life of its own, blending intricate progressive structures with deep-pocket funk grooves and improvisational energy. Led and curated by Kris Day, the band originally started off with guitarist/vocalist Kris from One. Man The Band, guitarist/vocalist Moe Michnick and bassist Richard Bureau of Astro Collective, and Kris' friend and colleague Nick LaMendola on drums. The group has performed only a handful of shows since its beginning, but Concept has built a reputation around the idea that every show is an unpredictable experience where innovation and creativity take the spotlight. Since then, the group has undergone some member changes and now operates primarily with Day and LaMendola along with the addition of Andy Phan to the group on keyboards. But that hasn't stopped the band's sound from evolving and taking shape into its own unique entity that seems to speak to its audience. Concept thrives on collaboration—pulling together a rotating lineup of seasoned players who bring their own voice to each performance. The result is a sound that feels both tightly composed and unpredictably alive, shifting between complex rhythms, extended jams, and infectious, danceable moments.
