    City Of Caterpillar

Screamo greats City of Caterpillar were only around for a few years in the early ’00s, but they left a major mark on the genre. It’s a sound that’s more popular than ever today, and plenty of modern bands would surely name them as an influence (La Dispute definitely owe some of their sound to them). City of Caterpillar had a spastic, progressive take on screamo, similar to something like pg.99 (with whom they released a split and shared members) or Circle Takes the Square. If you’ve never heard their sole full-length, 2002’s self-titled, you should remedy that immediately. The album was recently repressed on vinyl.

Now that the reissue is out there, the band’s “classic” lineup of of Brandon Evans (guitar/vocals), Kevin Longendyke (bass/vocals), Jeff Kane (guitar) and Ryan Parrish (drums) are reuniting for their first shows in 13 years! -Brooklyn Vegan

  • Thou

    Heavy Metal

Thou is a doom/sludge/drone metal band from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Their lyrics deal mostly with social decay, death, and general despair. All of their recorded music, after a period of time, is posted for free on their homepage,

Despite having only released four full-lengths - "Peasant", "Tyrant", "Summit", and "Heathen", Thou have an extensive and varied discography. The band have released several EPs, including a collection of Black Sabbath covers ("Through the Empires of Eternal Void") and splits with bands such as Kowloon Walled City, Leech, and Hell.

Thou are quite involved in the New Orleans DIY scene, and, as stated above, make all of their music available for free.

"Hits hard like a claw hammer to the back of the head, serving to make 'em the bleak-yet-ball-busting proposition you'd be hard pushed to ignore." Rock Sound Magazine

"Litany for the Whale strikes a solid balance on their debut EP, Dolores, finding a comfortable middle between simply blistering, heavy hardcore and more artistic, experimental flourishes."

"Here is a band to watch. If they’re this strong on their debut EP, in both musicianship and presentation, there’s a very good chance that these guys are going to get big. Judging by this record, that’s a good thing."

"It didn't seem possible but Litany For The Whale have managed to pull off the impossible on debut effort Dolores — they've created something new, engaging and truly weird."

"Santa Rosa, CA’s LITANY FOR THE WHALE are as hard to categorize as their cryptic, vaguely unsettling moniker may suggest. Combining the epic, doomy hardcore of Cursed with the crusty sensibilities of Kylesa, their expansive, noisy sound borrows as much from the Jesus Lizard as it does Battlefields."

"Litany for the Whale has put out Dolores, an album I cannot help but compare to Converge’s Jane Doe. It begins with a couple terrifying minutes of noise courtesy of the Velvet Teen’s Judah Nagler—I think of it as a more ferocious, cracked-out stepsister of “Sartre Ringo,” from Elysium, and makes stronger the case for noise as composition. The rest of the album is like morphine for people raised on hardcore, which is not to say it’s wimpy. Just soothing." City Sound Inertia

"Litany are a mixed bag of dark charging hardcore, chaotic grit and haunting atmospherics. Exploring the seedy underbelly of raw punk and noisy “post rock” the four piece hit with a wall of sound that smells of booze and tastes of blood."
