Charlie’s arrangements of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Joplin paired with his Hard Bop groove originals. Charlie Apicella & Iron City have been in residence at Arthur’s Tavern since they’re reopening in May 2022. Trail-blazing percussionist Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, Rainbow Bridge, etc.) is a pioneer of the improvised music community which sprang to life in 1960s New York City.
In 2022 Charlie Apicella formed The Griots Speak with bassist William Parker, saxophonist Daniel Carter, and Juma. The band's debut Destiny Calling is available on Origin/ OA2 records.
Charlie Apicella was voted onto the 84th and 86th DownBeat Readers Poll for Guitar.
