Cautious Clay has built a career around creative dexterity. The singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist also known as Joshua Karpeh moves fluidly between alternative R&B, soul, jazz, indie and pop, pairing meticulous musicianship with an instinct for melody and emotionally direct songwriting.
A classically trained flutist and largely self-taught producer, Karpeh first emerged with a run of acclaimed independent releases before making his full-length debut with *Deadpan Love* in 2021. His 2023 album *KARPEH* marked a deeply personal evolution, drawing on jazz, family history and his own musical upbringing to create an intimate portrait of the person behind Cautious Clay.
He has continued expanding that world with *The Hours*, an ambitious trilogy exploring the shifting moods, relationships and rhythms of a day. Beginning with the bright, structured *The Hours: Morning*, moving through the darker and more spontaneous *The Hours: Night*, and concluding with the warm, reflective *The Hours: High Noon*, the series showcases the range that has become central to his work. Across the trilogy, jazz, alternative R&B, neo-soul, ambient music, pop and reggae influences coexist naturally, connected by Karpeh’s singular voice and perspective.
That versatility extends well beyond his own records. Cautious Clay has become a sought-after songwriter, producer and collaborator, working with artists including Billie Eilish, John Mayer, John Legend, Khalid, Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq, Remi Wolf, Tycho and others. Whether writing for himself or collaborating with another artist, his approach remains rooted in curiosity, musicianship and an ability to move comfortably between genres without being defined by any one of them.
With *The Hours* trilogy complete, Cautious Clay enters his next chapter with an increasingly expansive creative identity: an artist, writer, producer and instrumentalist whose strength lies not simply in crossing musical boundaries, but in making those boundaries feel increasingly irrelevant.
