Description
The Byron Asher/Tomas Majcherski Quartet is a new co-led formation, performing the two multi-reedists' compositions that explore the different instrumentations and timbres available to the group. They are joined by top young creative bassist Matt Booth (Extended Trio) and long-time New Orleans by way of Memphis drummer Doug Garrison (The Iguanas). Asher and Majcherski met in New Orleans in 2013 and formed a fast working relationship, performing together and subbing for each other in various projects around town. After a decade of friendship, they began working on this project in 2023 and will be recording their debut album as co-leaders in winter 2024.   Byron Asher is a saxophonist and clarinetist and composer based in New Orleans. Raised in Maryland, he has performed across Europe and the US at major festivals and art centers including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He is a 2022 OneBeat Fellow, a program of the US State Department. As a composer, Byron’s work has been supported by MacDowell, South Arts, and A Studio In The Woods, among others. Based in Louisiana since 2011, Byron leads Skrontch Music, an award-winning experimental large ensemble, and Basher, a “free jazz party band,” among many other projects. Also an educator, Byron is adjunct faculty in the music department at the University of New Orleans.   Born in New York City in 1989, Tomas Majcherski took to music at a young age, eventually studying saxophone under the direction of Hal Mckusick. In 2019 he received an MM from the University of New Orleans, where he studied under the direction of Ed Petersen. While at UNO, he was awarded the ASCAP Louis Armstrong Foundation Scholarship for his compositions. In 2022, Tomas resettled back in NYC. He has performed in many cities and countries around the world, including at the Montreal Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, and Umbria Jazz Festival.
