Description
Grammy Award-winning blues artist Cedric Burnside is one of the leading voices carrying the rich tradition of Mississippi Hill Country Blues into a new generation. The grandson of legendary bluesman R.L. Burnside, Cedric began touring at age 13 as his grandfather’s drummer and has spent decades developing his own distinctive sound while honoring the legacy of the music that shaped him. A recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship—the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts—and the 2024 Mississippi Governor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Music, Burnside has earned multiple Grammy nominations and won a Grammy Award for his 2021 album I Be Trying. His acclaimed 2024 release, Hill Country Love, was recorded in a rustic building in Ripley, Mississippi, capturing the raw energy, authenticity, and spirit that define his music. Blending traditional Hill Country Blues with elements of rock, soul, R&B, and funk, Burnside creates music that is both deeply rooted and unmistakably modern. Having performed and recorded with artists ranging from Bobby Rush and Jimmy Buffett to Widespread Panic, he continues to bring the hypnotic grooves and storytelling traditions of North Mississippi blues to audiences around the world. Born into the bloodline of the blues, Garry Burnside carries the torch of Mississippi Hill Country music with fire, funk, and fearless originality. The youngest son of legendary bluesman R.L. Burnside, Garry was raised on rhythm — cutting his teeth in juke joints, house parties, and front porches where the groove never stopped. At just 12 years old, Garry began playing bass for Junior Kimbrough, writing the bass lines that would help define a generation of Hill Country sound. Since then, he’s grown into a powerhouse artist in his own right — a seasoned musician, vocalist, and songwriter with a deep reverence for the past and a bold vision for the future. Now Grammy nominated and fronting the Garry Burnside Band, Garry delivers raw, hypnotic blues infused with funk, soul, and rock-n-roll swagger that electrifies every stage. He’s backed by a dynamic crew of seasoned players: Fred Dunlap on drums brings deep pocket and explosive drive; Kevin Spight holds it down with rich, soulful bass lines; Brian West on keys adds depth, texture, and gospel fire to the mix; and powerhouse vocalist Tessa Danielle brings it all together with soaring, soulful vocals that cut straight to the heart. Their full-band setup brings a powerful, high-energy sound, but for more intimate settings, the band can strip down to a tight duo or trio—retaining all the groove and soul, while tailoring the experience to fit any space. In 2024, Garry signed with Strolling Bones Records, marking a new era with fresh recordings and an expanding national presence. Garry Burnside’s new album It’s My Time Now is set to release on August 22, 2025, showcasing his signature blend of Hill Country blues, funk, and rock with a fresh, electrifying edge. The band is a fixture at the Burnside Music Festival in Ripley, Mississippi — a growing annual event that celebrates the legacy of Hill Country blues and the community that birthed it. With deep roots and relentless drive, the Garry Burnside Band isn’t just keeping the blues alive — they’re making sure it thrives, evolves, and stays dangerous.
