The Panamanian GRAMMY Award–winning pianist and composer Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time, widely acclaimed both for his work with the Wayne Shorter band and his superb recordings as a leader. Released on Impulse! in 1996, Panamonk is an outstanding entry in the Pérez discography and (according to Scott Yanow at AllMusic) “one of the more interesting Thelonious Monk tribute albums of the 1990s. Pianist Danilo Pérez…has clearly learned from Monk’s music, particularly in his use of space and quirky dissonances. The trio performances range from respectful ballads and Latinized treatments of Monk tunes to originals that somehow fit logically into the mood of the set…The music overall is adventurous, rhythmic, and quite joyful.” Accompanied by the exceptional rhythm team of bassist Ben Street and drummer Terri Lynne Carrington, this special engagement by Danilo Pérez closes our “Brilliant Corners” series – Jazz Standard’s tribute to “the loneliest” Thelonious Monk in his centennial year.
