Breaks and Swells, LOUIZA, Motus
With influences ranging across the spectrum of Soul, Rock, Funk, Jazz, and Pop, Breaks and Swells are hard to pin down. What isn't hard to understand is the power and energy they bring to performances; convincing even usually hard-to-sway Seattle crowds to get down and dance. The band released an Erik Blood-produced LP, "We Will Not Despair” in 2018. Look out for "Entomology" in 2022!
California native and indie pop singer-songwriter LOUIZA is gearing up to release her next project, On, Off the EP, on June 26th. The songs on the EP wrestle with the role of technology in everyday life. “In some ways, devices like our mobile phones, computers and the internet provide us with the feeling that we hold an on, off switch,” says LOUIZA. She says the longer humans depend on technologies for aiding in things like DNA testing for predicting the health of offspring, the deeper we dive into blurring the line between who - or what - holds the “on, off switch.” LOUIZA is no stranger to playing with concepts and sounds - one critique said “Carefully constructed sonic patchwork...LOUIZA refuses to be constrained by genre” (The Line of Best Fit). Working with her co-creator, Jamie, LOUIZA found herself inspired to venture beyond the normal analog sound and test out more drum tracks and samples.
Born in Marin County, California, LOUIZA grew up on music. Constantly singing and finding ways to make sounds, the artist recalls “one of my first babysitters later told me that I once asked her if we could only sing to each other instead of speaking for an entire day.” As she got older, LOUIZA found herself drawn to creating music like it was simply a part of her nature, singing and writing as if she was speaking into a diary. She graduated from New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in her twenties and officially embarked on her music debut. Since then, she’s released two albums - Party Trick and Swim At Night - and has been acclaimed by top music tastemakers like Billboard, The Line of Best Fit, and The Deli SF. With a strong hand in every step of the creative process behind each release, LOUIZA knows exactly who she is and has confidence in her music to speak for itself.
LOUIZA’s sound is best described as a charismatic blend of jazz and electro-pop with an underlining hint of alternative rock. Vocally, she’s inspired by legends like Joni Mitchell and Kurt Cobain, who she’s been highly compared to by fans and media. While she maintains a distinctly pop backbone, LOUIZA plays around with fresh concepts for each new project. On, Off takes on a more dark prism, metallic rainbow mental stimulation that entices listeners to dive into the messages while sitting above the clouds on the tracks’ playfully seductive qualities. The fact that LOUIZA finds strength in visuals comes as no surprise as her music is elegantly vibrant in a way that can transform the space in which it’s playing.
Tracks on the EP ride between conversations about dating apps to twisted romance under surveillance to a child’s colorful view of themself. Along with the On, Off she will be releasing a single called “Anomie,” a dark-pop track that alludes to society’s relationship with social media on June 4th. The music video for the single will debut during her June 26 EP release party. Fans can stream On, Off on all major streaming platforms as well as watch the “Anomie” music video on Youtube on June 26.
“Motus is loud, soulful, jazzy, somewhat theatrical, and lighthearted. The whole sound went as perfectly together as chocolate, wine, and cheese. Smooth, rich, and indulgent.”
-Caitlin Cohen, What’s Up Magazine
“An eclectic, entertaining and enthralling gumbo of sound that puts you in the mind of a new aged more soulful ‘New York Voices.’ Each Song pulls you in with the intention to make you dance, cry, or think introspectively.”
“Soulful and glorious, they breathe some new life into the local funk scene. Enjoy them and bring some good dancing shoes.”
-Brent Cole, What’s Up Magazine
