Pure blues at its most urgently expressive. A rollicking tour de force.
--Living Blues

Dynamic excitement…Nick Moss is a major force in contemporary blues.
--Blues Music Magazine

Guitar hero Nick Moss paid his dues gigging in the city’s blues clubs under the tutelage of some of the city’s greatest blues luminaries. His fiery fretwork, gruff, soul-charged vocals and memorable original songs place him in a league of his own. Living Blues says, “Nick Moss's muscular, electric energy combines jaw-dropping guitar, gruff, soulful vocals and impassioned songwriting.

Growing up in Chicago and standing tall at 6’2”, Moss dreamed of playing both music and sports. His mother was a huge blues fan, even taking a young Nick to see Muddy Waters live in concert. Kidney surgery sidelined his athletic hopes. To lift his spirits, Nick’s brother snuck the 18-year-old Nick out of the hospital soon after his surgery and took him across the street to see Alligator artists Little Charlie & The Nightcats perform. It was there and then that Nick dove headfirst into the blues, deciding that a career as bluesman was for him.

Originally a bass player, Moss got his first professional break touring and playing with legendary West Side Chicago guitarist Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins. He next toured with Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (longtime Muddy Waters’ drummer), leader of the Legendary Blues Band. Finding himself in need of a guitarist, Smith insisted Moss switch instruments. Combining his natural talent with non-stop woodshedding and playing every jam session, Moss quickly became one of the city’s most highly sought-after players. Bluesman Jimmy Rogers (famous for his pioneering guitar work with Muddy Waters and for his solo hit Walking By Myself) hired Moss to join his touring band and became his mentor. Moss’ other influences include B.B. King, Freddie King, Earl Hooker, Magic Slim and other groundbreaking players.

Moss formed his own band in 1997 and released the first of his 13 albums a year later on his own independent Blue Bella label. Since then he’s earned legions of fans around the world, playing over 100 shows a year. Moss has shared stages with Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Gary Clark, Jr., David Hidalgo and many others, and is an in-demand guest, always welcome to sit in with his musician friends around the world.

Nick Moss follows his most critically and commercially successful album to date (Privileged) with the release of Here I Am, a record already drawing raves from peers and mentors like renowned bluesman Jimmy Thackery, who has praised this new set for “pushing the evolution of his music” with tunes that are “genuine and intense.”

Here I Am is bursting with personal growth and the kind of honesty fans have come to expect from Moss, whose unique approach to traditional Chicago blues on five studio records and two live albums resulted in multiple Blues Music Award nominations from the Blues Foundation. Here I Am is the confident statement from Moss the new path he forged on Privileged was just the beginning. These 10 new originals combine to create the most diverse album of his career as he pushes his sound, songwriting, and lead guitar work further than ever before, demonstrating time and again why music historian and critic Bill Dahl calls Nick “the most exciting blues guitarist we have around here.”

Moss has given guitar lovers plenty to sink their teeth into with extended songs and solos but there’s more to Here I Am than just great lead playing. Moss and his band again use a foundation of blues, rock, and roots as starting points but take new and unexpected turns on these 10 originals whether it’s the funk-fused jam session of “Caught By Surprise” or the gospel-tinged first single “It’ll Turn Around.”

“It’ll Turn Around” is timely and timeless, offering an uplifing message of hope in tumultuous times that find people struggling to put their life back together after earthquakes and hurricanes against a backdrop of economic turmoil.

Moss is backed on Here I Am by keyboard/organist Travis Reed, Michael Ledbetter (guitar/backing vocals), and Patrick Seals (drums). Bass duties on the record were handled by Nik Skilnik and “Stumpy” Hutchkins but it will be Matthew Wilson on bass and backing vocals on the Here I Am tour, giving Moss his most versatile lineup to date.

Nick Moss is the “The Man In The Maze” depicted on the cover of Here I Am (inspired by Tonono O’odham symbol), but as the title implies, he has a clear sense of where he’s heading and music lovers will want to make sure they come along for the ride.
