Description
Derrick “Duckie” Simpson, known as the “Gong Gong Gullie,” is the founder and leader of reggae legends Black Uhuru. Despite numerous lineup changes over the decades, the group has remained one of the most recognized and prolific reggae bands for over 50 years. Black Uhuru was formed in Kingston, Jamaica’s Waterhouse district—also known as “Firehouse”—a community that produced many reggae greats. It was here that Simpson grew up and developed his musical roots alongside Winston “Pipe” Matthews and Lloyd “Bread” McDonald of The Wailing Souls, as well as Bob Marley. After recording with The Wailing Souls, he went on to form his own group. The original lineup—Simpson, Euvin “Don Carlos” Spencer, and Rudolph “Garth” Dennis—released early singles before parting ways. Simpson later reformed Black Uhuru, leading the group to international prominence with Michael Rose and Sandra “Puma” Jones, alongside Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Their powerful, bass-driven sound produced classics like “Shine Eye Gal,” “General Penitentiary,” and “What Is Life.” With landmark albums including Red and Anthem, Black Uhuru made history by winning the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1984. They toured worldwide, opening for The Rolling Stones and The Police, helping bring reggae to global audiences. Andrew “Bee’s” Beckford joined the group in 1996 and has been the lead singer for over 30 years, carrying forward Black Uhuru’s signature sound and live energy. With 14 studio albums, 7 dub albums, and 4 live recordings, Black Uhuru remains one of reggae’s best-selling acts after Bob Marley. Red was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s.” In addition to their Grammy win, they’ve earned five more nominations and received the Diamond Awards of Excellence (1994). Despite decades of change,Simpson remains the constant force behind the band’s legacy. In 2018, they released As The World Turns (Grammy-nominated), followed by New Day (2022), continuing over 50 years of global influence.
