Birth 25TH Anniversary Show
It's been 25.3 years since the experimental jazz trio Birth played their first concert performance, in the beloved, bygone diy venue Speak In Tongues…
Over these many years, Cleveland’s own stalwart trio, Birth, (featuring Joshua Smith (sax), Joe Tomino (drums), and Jeremy Bleich (bass)), has continued to evolve their material and create new music and records, while refining their forward thinking compositions and of course, their improvising as a band. From the band’s early days in Cleveland playing ‘live drum and bass and experimental music’, the music has evolved into the sound of, well, Birth. Their amalgam of pure melody, abstraction, groove, avant-garde jazz, electro-acoustic improvisation, rock, and song forms, now aged 25 years, remains true to its uncompromising musical tenets. This 25th anniversary concert on October 15th on the floor of the Beachland Ballroom will be no exception.
Now geographically dispersed, with Smith residing in New Orleans, Bleich in New Mexico, and drummer Joe Tomino residing in Northeast Ohio, Birth has played their music in many venues and spaces over these 25 years, but, notably, there was a significant series of concerts when the band’s home base was, down on the floor at the Beachland Ballroom surrounded by lamps, back in those early aughts, and that setting will be revisited on the 15th of October, 2023 when we play in the big space as though we are in our own living room. This concert will be the culmination of Birth’s stint of southern (to northern) gigs starting in New Orleans and culminating with this 25th Anniversary show in Cleveland.
