More than 50 years into a storied professional career, “the eminent drummer Billy Hart brings his vast experience of working with everyone from Wes Montgomery to Miles Davis to his own tight–knit bands.” (The New Yorker) Hart’s voluminous credits include stints with Herbie Hancock (1969–73), McCoy Tyner (1973–74), and Stan Getz (1974–77); as a leader, he’s released 11 albums beginning in 1977 with Enchance (A&M/Horizon). His latest CD, The Broader Picture (enja/Yellowbird, 2016), offers eight new Billy Hart originals, arranged and conducted by Christophe Schweizer, and superbly performed by the WDR Big Band. Hart brings in his tried and true quartet, made up of three of the most in demand musicians in jazz: Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson, and Ben Street. “Mr. Hart…has covered the full jazz spectrum during his accomplished career; he isn’t a classicist or a throwback. His younger band mates demonstrate a grasp of modern traditions but also a strong aversion to nostalgia. The whole enterprise functions in the present tense.” (The New York Times)
