Longtime fans of Benny Golson know that he’s not only a fluid improviser and accomplished composer, but also a nonpareil raconteur who captivates his listeners with firsthand tales of his life in jazz, growing up alongside such fellow legends as John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, and Art Farmer. A favorite of Jazz Standard audiences since his debut in 2012, Golson was born 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, and came up through the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic, and Art Blakey. By 1959, Benny and trumpeter Art Farmer were co–leading The Jazztet – one of the most successful small groups of the early Sixties, thanks to the strength of Golson’s original material including the all–time jazz classics “Killer Joe,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Stablemates,” “Whisper Not,” and “Blues March.” “…Golson was charismatic, funny and compelling. His monologues were as spellbinding — and as worth the price of admission by themselves — as the songs between them. “In my experience…of writing about and recording musicians, Benny Golson stands out as a man whose musical skills and capacities are extraordinarily wide–ranging,” Nat Hentoff wrote some years ago in The New York Times. “…Benny continually impresses me with the freshness of his musical conceptions. But I am never surprised that they always work exactly as he says they will, because they always do.” Born 1929 in Philadelphia PA, Golson learned to play saxophone alongside his good friend John Coltrane, and came up through the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic and Art Blakey. By 1959, Benny and trumpeter Art Farmer were co–leading The Jazztet – one of the most successful small groups of the early 1960s, thanks to the strength of Golson’s original material including the all–time jazz classics “Killer Joe,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Along Came Betty,” “Stablemates,” “Whisper Not,” “Blues March,” and “Five Spot After Dark.” Beyond the jazz world, Benny has composed and arranged music for everyone from Sammy Davis Jr. to Dusty Springfield; his prolific Hollywood studio résumé includes scores for numerous films and television series. Benny Golson’s 2009 Concord Music CD, New Time, New 'Tet, is “an excellent set of straight–ahead jazz from one of the true masters who needs to reclaim or affirm nothing in his decades as one of the true legends in American music.” (Michael G.
