Bella Kay has quickly emerged as one of the most emotionally resonant new stars in pop. Bella writes songs that come alive with intimacy and ache, exploring heartache, alienation, and survival with refreshing honesty and messiness. Executive produced by Idarose (Becky G, Suki Waterhouse, Joji) and recorded between New York and Los Angeles throughout 2026, My Reckless Abandon is a leap forward in production and shows how Bella is swiftly growing as a songwriter. Desire is a recurring theme, and Bella is often torn between body and brain. Her lust is barely contained on the opening rocker “Blur,” and she’s matter-of-fact on “swu,” beginning the song with the declaration, “I want to have sex with you.” But at the same time, she confides that intimacy can lead to terrifyingly vulnerable possibilities: “What if we do/And you decide/That you don’t want me?”  Even if she has moved through life and love with moments of Reckless Abandon, Bella handles several subjects with the utmost care. “Sleep For Dinner” is a ballad that discloses patterns of restrictive eating and body dysmorphia and confronts the intrusive and obsessive mental imprisonment that can accompany these conditions. “How can something meant to keep you alive/Keep you from living,” she asks. “A Father's Lament” opens with a sample from Bella’s real-life dad and offers advice on how to move through a cruel world as a person of color. “Girls like you can’t be proud/Humble/Smart /And patient/Live those words like they’re sacred/You’re black baby girl/Don’t waste it.” At the end of the song, Bella hopes that future generations of innocents will be spared from so much pain. On the closing track, “i deserve better.,” Bella explores how low self-esteem may have unconsciously led her to rationalize poor treatment in the past (as on the hazy “tongue”). “I’m not perfect, not ever,” she concedes, but after countless times fighting for someone who wouldn’t do the same, she finally understands her worth. Born in Houston, Bella spent her childhood moving frequently, criss-crossing Texas with her siblings and parents, who work in the travel industry. Beyond a brief stint in homeschooling, she frequently played the role of “new girl,” relying on humor to adapt to evolving social dynamics that could be strained or exclusionary for a young bi-racial girl. Along the way, Bella got to know her own inner world very well. “With all those moves, I didn't have time to lose myself in friends,” she says. “I had to have a strong relationship with myself.” Music and writing were constants throughout the upheaval. When Bella wasn’t singing in choir or performing in musical theater productions, she was blasting pop music through her earbuds and penning novellas into her phone. The family moved to Austin when Bella entered junior high school, in hopes of finding an environment that embraced creativity and was more accepting of blended families. Around the same time, during COVID, forthright songwriters like Olivia Rodrigo and Lizzy McAlpine encouraged her to combine her artistic passions. "My dad, who always encouraged us to pursue our passions, bought me a starter guitar,” she says. “And I literally never stopped.” She taught herself to play guitar using YouTube tutorials, and after a year or so, introduced herself as a songwriter at her high school open mic nights.  Confidence bolstered by a positive reception, Bella continued writing songs that channeled the sadness, frustration, and pleasures of her life. By the end of her first year of college, Bella found herself at a crossroads. Unsure if she wanted to continue pursuing pre-law, she decided to give music a serious shot. “I had so many songs to write after going through a terrible breakup,” she says, noting, wryly, “I got a lot better at guitar.” Throughout the summer of 2025, Bella shared her music on TikTok with increased determination and intention. This attitude is typical of Bella: she takes every no or disappointment as a personal challenge and works tirelessly until she emerges on the other side, saying, “Look what I can do.” She’s a fighter, a doer, and she shines unapologetically. The song that went viral in August was “The Sick,” an unblinking ballad about pining for a person who is no good for you. “The Sick” has since surpassed 210 million streams across streaming platforms and over 2.6 billion TikTok views. In November 2025, the track appeared on Bella’s debut EP, November 2025’s sick to my stomach, which also featured the melancholic “Lonely.” On both, Bella turns her lens on herself with remarkable nuance, embracing complex feelings like shame rather than brushing them aside. “Just because I felt it doesn’t make it true,” she says. “Putting those thoughts into song gives it perspective as just something I felt at a moment in time.”  In February 2026, Bella shared her second EP, a couple minutes out. Each song is deep in the throes of yearning, from lingering thoughts of a lost love to desiring something but feeling incapable of having it. “I can't treat you right if I treat myself like this,” she sings with disarming honesty on the slow-burning “Steady.” “I need to get better, swear I'm working on it.” Longing obliterates her better judgment on “iloveitiloveitiloveit,” an earworm about throwing romantic caution to the wind. “I'm very in tune with my emotions when it comes to relationships,” Bella says. “I know when something is bad for me, but I'm pretty much always going to do it anyway.” Listeners could relate—the song’s meteoric ascent has resulted in Bella’s Hot 100 debut, an American Music Awards nomination for “Song of the Summer,” and over 445 million streams and 3.3 billion views across 1.3 million TikTok creates to date.  The final EP in the trio of three packs was May’s are you mad at me? The titular question comes from the provocative “Say it Say,” in which Bella pleads with someone to stop avoiding confrontation. At the same time, she looks in the mirror on “Promise?” and recognizes that her fears of rejection are preventing her from being honest about her all-consuming crush. “When people hear my music, I want them to recognize themselves and their own experiences,” Bella says. “Those tracks are the ones that I listen to one thousand times—songs are better when they’re honest.”
