    Navarro

    Hip-Hop/Rap

From within the streets of Chicago, beyond the daily commute of the 9 to 5ers and among the music blaring in the streets, Navarro (formerly known as Scheme) makes his presence known and begins to make his mark taking his outlook on Hip Hop to a new level. Influenced by artists who range from Nas to Carlos Santana, Navarro is a vivid writer with a story to tell and an uncanny talent to point out with precision the realities of life as a Latino in the United States. A first generation Mexican-American, his exposure to different cultures, languages and walks of life have helped create a voice for the generation of kids who were the first to grow up in the U.S., all the while unsure of where they really belonged.

At an early age, Navarro started rewriting lyrics from some of his favorite records, studying the rhyme’s structure and flow. Learning the ins and outs of the genre, he discovered a balance between his foundation as a lyricist and the concepts and melodies used to deliver his message. Through his music, he tells the story of how Hip Hop changed his feeling of not belonging and the way music accepts every race, every color and every class. Using his words as a weapon for good he captures moments in life that can change moods, create ideas and generate emotion.

With topics ranging from identity to gang violence, being a Chicano to immigration, Navarro’s music resonates the voice of the people - Same Rebel, New Cause.

    Jay Lyn Gatz

    Hip-Hop/Rap

Jay Lyn Gatz is an up and coming hip-hop artist born on the south side of Chicago. Relocating to the south suburbs, he began rapping in 2001. Starting as a frequent hobby recording with his cousin, it became a habit that he has been in love with ever since. After his father passed away in September 2008, Gatz’ music served as an outlet to polish his craft and individuality. He wants his words to stick with people like his father’s words stuck with him. In his music, he never wastes words; he always raps with a definite purpose.

Being influenced by various artists that were played in his household, he has formulated a laid-back sound with a sharp romantic flow and a suave persona to match. His demeanor was described by television director Debbie Allen as “cool and smooth”, “relaxed”, and “sly.” His 6 foot 4 inch stature and giant afro allows him to stand out amongst a crowd.

Jay Lyn Gatz has a wide range of inspirations such as video games, literature, 90’s pop culture, the afros of the 70’s, anime, films, visual artwork, and graphic novels. 90’s hip-hop particularly inspires Gatz because of its ability to contain substance with a gritty outer layer. Actor Kel Mitchell featured his song “Paris, Tokyo Remix” on his website saying, “This artist represented for all the 90’s babies! His lyrics were on point speaking about his memories of the 90’s shows and music! Very creative!”

Jay Lyn Gatz’ Soundcloud has reached over 300 thousand streams with no professional representation; only himself, his Surreal Gang crew, his personal assistant Twinkle Star, and his supporters. Chicago radio station WGCI played his song “Dance Central” with it being voted to stay on the air; breaking a long streak of songs getting voted off the air.

Jay Lyn Gatz is persistent when it comes to making original sounding music and is extremely strict on himself when it comes to his creative process. He is known to isolate himself from everyone for long periods of time to evade everyone’s music, ideas, and opinions to focus on creating music that’s as original as possible. He wants to inspire people to always follow their own path.

Rapper Common gave Jay Lyn Gatz advice that he got from Maya Angelou saying, “Don’t dim your light for anybody.” Through his music he wants to assure listeners that there is a light just for them and they should always embrace it. He’s currently planning his own musical events, working on music videos, a documentary, learning how to produce instrumentals, creating merchandise, and collaborating with other artists. He's looking to make an impact on music in Chicago and beyond with his unique sound, staggering signature afro, and shades.
