With an impressive track record of wildly imaginative performances, Mike Silverman—aka That1Guy—has carved out a singular space in the entertainment world. Known for his inventive instrument, The Magic Pipe, and his unmatched originality, he has become a true one-of-a-kind performer.

Averaging 150–200 shows annually across North America, Canada, and beyond, That1Guy is a regular favorite at major festivals like Electric Forest, Wakarusa, Big Day Out, High Sierra, Summer Meltdown, Montreal Jazz Festival, and more. He also earned the “Tap Water Award” for Best Musical Act at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Silverman’s collaboration with Buckethead as The Frankenstein Brothers further cemented his status as a creative visionary. His innovation continues with his touring production That1Guy & The Magic Pipe Present: An Evening of Musical Magical Wonder... The Likes of Which Ye Haven’t Yet Seen, a live performance merging music, magic, and visual spectacle.

Central to the experience is The Magic Pipe—a towering, custom-built contraption of metal, strings, and electronics that enables him to conjure soundscapes in real time. He blends sleight-of-hand, sonic illusion, and theatrical flair to deliver an immersive, mind-bending show. “So much of my music has miraculous qualities to it,” he explains. “There are lots of sleights of hand and sonic misdirection. It feels like I was meant to do magic.”

Silverman’s journey began traditionally enough: raised by a jazz musician father, he immersed himself in music early and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before becoming a standout bassist in the jazz scene. But he soon felt constrained by the instrument and pursued a sound he could truly call his own.

“I didn’t set out to be a weirdo,” he says. “But I’m starting to embrace it.” His vision led to the creation of The Magic Pipe and the birth of That1Guy. His groundbreaking work has earned praise from Billboard, who wrote, “In the case of Mike Silverman’s slamming, futuristic funk act... the normal rules of biology just don’t apply.”

As he continues to push boundaries with new music and video projects, That1Guy remains driven by a deep creative impulse: “Human beings do our best work when we’re challenged. It’s easy to be lazy when you don’t have to come up with something creative right away.”
