    Country

Hilljack wasn’t assembled in a rehearsal room. It grew out of decades of friendships, songwriting sessions, and shared stages among four musicians whose individual careers have helped shape country music. Formed in the early 2000s as a creative outlet for friends who simply loved making music together, Hilljack has always been about the songs. Following a hiatus, the band reunited in 2025, picking up right where they left off with the same camaraderie and passion that brought them together in the first place.

At the center of the band is Paul Jefferson, an acclaimed Nashville songwriter and artist whose songs have been recorded by Keith Urban, Aaron Tippin, Buddy Jewell, Little Texas, and many others. His gift for storytelling and unmistakable voice remain at the heart of Hilljack’s sound.

Porter Howell, founding member, lead guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter for the multi-platinum country band Little Texas, brings decades of hit-making experience to the group. As a co-writer of classics including “What Might Have Been,” “My Love,” and “God Blessed Texas,” Howell’s signature guitar work and distinctive musical style have helped define one of the most successful country bands of the 1990s. His high-energy guitar playing is a driving force in Hilljack’s live show.

Original member John Riffe has been behind the drum kit since Hilljack’s earliest days, providing the steady groove and musical foundation that shaped the band’s sound from the beginning. Over the course of his career, Riffe has toured with artists including Jerry Reed, John Conlee, and currently performs with Seals & Crofts 2. His high harmonies are a standout part of the Hilljack sound. His long-standing connection with the other members remains a key part of Hilljack’s chemistry.

Rounding out the lineup is Sonny LeMaire, the longtime bassist, vocalist, and award winning songwriter with the legendary band Exile. A longtime friend within the original Hilljack circle who was part of the early songwriting sessions in the early 2000s, LeMaire joined the band for its 2025 reunion, adding his signature bass work, vocals, and decades of experience to the current lineup.

While each member continues to maintain an active career outside of Hilljack, the project gives them a chance to return to the music they’ve built together over decades. The result is a timeless blend of country and Americana rooted in strong songwriting, seasoned musicianship, and genuine connection.

Hilljack isn’t about recreating the past or chasing trends. It’s four friends making music with no agenda other than the songs themselves.
