ABOUT THE FOUNDATION:
The Angela and John Witherspoon Family Foundation's mission is to help artist's in their time of need. Many years ago, the great actress Rosalind Cash had to go to the Screen Actors Guild emergency fund to get help to pay her rent. Angela heard the story and was surprised at how long it took to get those emergency funds.

John Witherspoon was known for paying his rent six months in advance while struggling to make it as a comic and an actor. "This way, I will always have a roof over my head. I can’t eat chicken wings, but I have somewhere to lay my head". This Fund is for true emergencies, not to finish your tv pilot or to help complete your script. Today many artists are one job away from living in their cars.

Angela controls the fund directly, and if she hears of an emergency, she can write the check. Small gifts have been given to actors and musicians, and comics over the years. The average gift is $2,000. Some gifts are $500. It can make a big difference to a young actor, artist, writer, or comic trying to make it to the next opportunity. Many young talents were simply forced to move back home during the pandemic. No administration fees are charged to the Foundation, only the preparation of the taxes each year, which is deducted; this is to maintain our 501(c) status.

AN EVENING OF COMEDY, MUSIC & ART honoring George Wallace || Hosted by BILL BELLAMY (Television star & Comedian)

  • Bill Bellamy

    Bill Bellamy

    Comedy

Using his experiences growing up in Newark Bill Bellamy started doing stand-up while he was a student at Rutgers University. Bellamy quickly discovered how much he enjoyed making people laugh and began honing his skills at small comedy clubs around the country and soon was making waves in the New York clubs like The Improv The Comic Strip and at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

Two short years later Bellamy had earned a spot on HBO’s DEF COMEDY JAM where he notoriously coined the phrase “Booty Call.” The now famous late-night rendezvous moniker became the name for his first comedy special for Showtime; “Booty Call” was instantly one of the network’s top-rated specials. On the heels of the success of that special in the years following Bellamy became a staple on MTV as one of the first “VJs” on the network. He hosted several of their programming blocks including MTV JAMS and MTV BEACH HOUSE while interviewing everyone from the late Kurt Cobain to Janet Jackson.

Landing his own series “The Billy Bellamy Show” in 1996 Bellamy continued to star on the big screen in addition to garnering coveted guest roles in several prominent television series. In the feature world Bellamy starred in LOVE JONES HOW TO BE A PLAYER LOVE STINKS THE BROTHERS and ANY GIVEN SUNDAY. At the same time showcasing his mutli-hyphenate talents Bellamy continued to hone his comedy and stand-up prowess. He debuted his second comedy special; CRAZY SEXY DIRTY in May 2012 was one of the highest rated comedy specials of their respective years on Showtime.

Bellamy has recently guest-starred on USA’s WHITE COLLAR and appeared on several episodes of Tyler Perry’s MEET THE BROWNS on TBS. He also guest-starred on ABC’s CASTLE and USA’s ROYAL PAINS. Previously he hosted four seasons of the TV One comedy competition show WHO’S GOT JOKES? and two seasons of NBC’s Emmy Nominated LAST COMIC STANDING.

Bellamy recently wrapped his sitcom from syndicated television comedy from producer Byron Allen MR. BOX OFFICE.   Bellamy starred alongside along side Jon Lovitz Tim Meadows and Viveca J. Fox.

Returning this year to his first love of stand-up comedy Bellamy debuted his third Showtime comedy special LADIES NIGHT OUT in February 2013. The nation-wide tour with the same name continued throughout the US in 2014. Both the special and the tour feature additional material by comedians Ali Siddiq J. Reid and D'Lai.

In addition to MR. BOX OFFICE Bill was recently a recurring co-host on THE RACHAEL RAY SHOW and ACCESS HOLLYWOOD and hosted the red carpet for the ESPY AWARDS for ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT.

This past year Bill headlined a nation-wide comedy tour The Standing Ovation Tour with Tommy Davidson Sommore Marc Curry & Tony Rock. Bellamy just wrapped principal photography on his latest film THE BOUNCE BACK with Shemar Moore and Nadine Velazquez. Next up Bill will headline a six city run for our US troops stationed in Japan.

His newest venture will be hosting the Telepictures/Scripps syndicated hit show LETS ASK AMERICA which will begin shooting in August of 2014 and airing in 2015 in most of the country’s major markets.

Bellamy resides with his wife and two young children in Los Angeles.

By the age of six George Wallace knew he wanted to be a comedian. He always enjoyed making people laugh but he also wanted an education. He attended the University of Akron Ohio and upon graduating with degrees in transportation and marketing Wallace entered the advertising work force. Within a week of leaving the advertising field he began to perform stand-up comedy and was offered a job writing for “The Red Foxx Show.”

With his writing and stand-up experience Wallace began landing television appearances. His credits include “The Late Show with David Letterman ” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno ” “Oprah ” “The View ” “The Arsenio Hall Show ” National Geographic’s “Brain Games ” “The Queen Latifah Show ” “Chelsea Lately ” “Lopez Tonight ” “Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes? ” “The Mo’Nique Show ” “Comics Unleashed ” “Larry the Cable Guy’s 2008 Christmas Special ” “Seinfeld ” “Hollywood Squares ” “Rosie O’Donnell ” “Scrubs ” “House of Payne ” “Entertainment Tonight” and “Extra ” among others. Wallace’s most recognized material is his “I Be Thinkin’” lines and jokes about everything from conversational thoughts to political aspirations. Each show he engages members of the audience in comical banter. If provoked he might even throw out a few of his signature “Yo Mama” jokes. He shows his gratitude to the audience by signing autographs and taking photos after every show.

    Catalina Jazz Club

    Contemporary Jazz

The American dream came true for Catalina Popescu in October of 1986 when she and her husband Bob created a supper club devoted to serving an experience of superb eats and the shared magic of live performance. That grand experience began at the door where every night her mother Maria would greet each guest as family and share in their love of music. Housed in Hollywood and decked out in a timeless charm, the club offers a cozy ambience under sparkling stage lights garnished with its signature concoction — Jazz. The first artist to grace the stage was the masterful flutist and saxophonist Buddy Collette, and ever since then, over the past 36 years, the Catalina Jazz Club has hosted the most illustrious legends of all time — from the powerful puffers of Dizzy Gillespie to the electrified fingers of McCoy Tyner, the bubbly belt of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Lynda Carter, the flirtatious saxophone of Joshua Redman, the slick strumming of Kenny Burrell, the insane drum clinic of Steve Gadd, the romance of Steve Tyrell, and the masterclass of Mike Stern.

For Catalina, Jazz is our way of life. It breathes pain. It knows love. It dreams hope. It bleeds courage. Whether we’re showcasing Broadway, Soul, R&B, or stand-up comedy, the lesson learned from all the greats who have serenaded our spirits is how to connect to one another. And that’s why the Catalina Jazz Club will always have a table ready for you.

The Catalina Jazz Club has been honored by A.S.M.A.C., California Jazz Foundation, Los Angeles Jazz Society, and a City of Los Angeles Certificate of Appreciation on their 25th Anniversary, which was awarded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LA City Council which included then City Council member and current Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
