Dew Drop Inn Revival presents:  ALEXEY MARTI & AFROGUMBO  Percussionist Alexey Marti brings the full set of Latin flavors to his unique style of Afro-Latin-Jazz. Born in Cuba, Marti began his musical journey by playing congas at age seven, as part of his family’s Santeria religious ceremonies. He then studied with the vocalist and percussionist Oscar Valdés, founder of the Cuban fusion group Irakere. Marti arrived in New Orleans in 2008 and began studying jazz composition at the University of New Orleans. He has recorded with artists such as Demetrio Muñiz, “Buena Vista Social Club,” The Headhunters, Delfeayo Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Preservation Hall, and Davell Crawford, among others. Alexey was tapped to lead the opening act when Latin Jazz legend Chucho Valdés toured New Orleans in 2013. He has become a staple on the local club scene and a headliner at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans. He has performed at festivals such as Congo Square, Bayou Boogaloo, and Jazz Ascona, as well as many esteemed venues like Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, The Joy Theater, and Maritime Park in Baltimore. Alexey’s 2017 debut album, “Travesia,” was met with critical acclaim. He began traveling around the world, composing and recording in Spain, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, New York, and Miami. The results can be heard on his 2018 follow-up, “Mundo,” a work that incorporates bossa nova, salsa, samba, and ballads with contemporary and traditional rhythms. He has been nominated for two consecutive years as "Best Latin Artist" in Gambit Weekly's Big Easy Awards. He has also released several singles, and will be releasing his third album in 2024.
