Aanya Sengupta is a vocalist, composer and educator currently studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She is a two-time recipient of DownBeat Student Awards in performance as an undergraduate jazz vocalist. Born and raised in in New Delhi, India, Aanya began her studies with Sentirenla Lucia (voice), Aman Mahajan (piano), and Somnath Halder (piano and theory; a student of the late Dr. Barry Harris). She moved to the U.S. in 2021 upon accepting a selective full tuition scholarship offer to attend the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studies privately with trumpeter Dr. Eddie Henderson and vocalist La Tanya Hall. She has also been a student of Dan Wall, Justin Robinson, Gerald Cannon and Paul Samuels. She was awarded the vocalist chair in the 2024-2025 Oberlin Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble, a group endowed by saxophonist Sonny Rollins that consists of outstanding Oberlin jazz students. Aanya has been a 2024 mentee in the Women in Jazz Organisation’s Mentors program, where she studied with soprano Candice Hoyes. A dedicated young educator, Aanya has been a returning teaching assistant at the JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Summer Workshop and CHiCA POWER! program, in addition to teaching privately.
