Canada's hardest-working super-group, THE SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA, have been perfecting their signature sound for over a decade now: a percussive explosion of Soul, Jazz, Afro, Latin and Caribbean rhythms, driven by majestic horn-drenched melodies, all backed by an arsenal of overheated primitive keyboards. The multicultural collective returns at full throttle this year with Solidarity, a dynamite new collaborative album released by UK-based Strut Records, featuring a range of unique artists connected to the group through Canada's vibrant underground scene, yet hailing from a variety of backgrounds, from Senegal to Brazil to Jamaica and beyond. These guests were the catalyst for memorable artistic exchange, where the group remained rooted in rhythmically rich musical traditions of the past, but kept their eyes firmly on the future, pushing the boundaries of Soul, Jazz and Tropical styles with a fresh set of heavyweight new songs, unified by an underlying message of positive social change. ZONGO JUNCTION is a giant band that pulls you to the dance floor and won't let you leave. Generating much well-deserved buzz in NYC's exploding afrobeat scene, their live show is revered for electrifying clubs with infectiously danceable, seeminly effortless West African grooves.

Now celebrating their 10th year, the Souljazz Orchestra continue their impressive run of memorable albums. Breaking through on Toronto label Do Right!, Freedom No Go Die (2006, featuring the huge single ‘Mista President’) and Manifesto (2008) set the bar high. Rising Sun (2010), their first album with Strut Records, was subsequently recognised as a landmark in deep, spiritual Afro Jazz. Meanwhile, as a live unit, years of relentless touring have formed the Ottawa-based combo into an in-demand fixture at venues and festivals worldwide.

Zongo Junction is a giant band that pulls everyone to the dance floor. If the Talking Heads produced a Fela Kuti record of Sun Ra’s music, the product would probably sound something like Brooklyn’s Zongo Junction. Generating a well-deserved buzz in NYC’s exploding afrobeat scene, the ensemble electrifies dance floors wherever they perform. The Village Voice describes their live show as, “Sheer energy with the force of a tractor-trailer that roars with power and noise.” With 5 horns, and a 6-piece rhythm section, audiences can’t help but move no matter where the band takes is playing.

In an industry where it’s become commonplace to watch bands perform with laptops & backing tracks instead of live musicians, Zongo Junction does it old school, 11 strong. When they hit the road, they need two vans and have more than ten mouths to feed. They know it’s difficult for a band their size to tour, but they do it anyway, and they make it look easy.

Zongo Junction’s first album, Thieves! (2010), included a collaboration with longtime Fela Kuti band member, Leon Kaleta Ligan-Majek. More recently the band has performed with FELA! cast member Abena Koomson. Members of the band have performed or recorded with TV On The Radio, Man Man, The Walkmen, and many more. After a residency at NYC’s renowned Brooklyn Bowl, a main stage performance at the Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, multiple tours to the West Coast, and bills shared with the Rebirth Brass Band, Balkan Beat Box, Toubab Krewe, Sinkane and more, everyone can agree that Zongo Junction has a busy future.

The band is hard at work recording their second album, scheduled for release in 2013. “In writing this music as a collective, a lot of really cool new influences have emerged,” points out tenor saxophonist Adam Schatz. The music on the album embraces individual members’ interests, from Dirty Projectors, to Albert Ayler, Wu Tang to Meshuggah. At the music’s core, you will always find the infectiously danceable West African grooves that are the foundation of Zongo Junction. The band effortlessly ties it together, resulting in a unique version of afrobeat.
