The story of THE BESNARD LAKES begins at Besnard Lake: a spectacular yet secluded water feature in rural Saskatchewan which the Montreal group’s husband and wife core, Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, visit each summer for inspiration and escape. This year the couple’s campsite was surrounded for a worrying few days by forest flames, a literal ring of fire which informed the devil-may-care spirit of their exuberant fifth album. Armed with demos and memories from their trip, the pair returned to the city and entered Breakglass Studios. Unique among their furrowed brow peers, THE BESNARD LAKES are unafraid to marry textured, questing headphone sonics to the honeyed pleasure of radio hits past: the rapture of MY BLOODY VALENTINE entwined with the romance of FLEETWOOD MAC. Imagine dreamy BEACH HOUSE riding LED ZEPPELIN dynamics, with unabashedly androgynous vocal harmonies. It's always a pleasure to havethe unbelievably loud, yet relentlessly epic, Chicago trio THE LIFE AND TIMES on The Empty Bottle stage. As difficult to classify in any genre due to their ever-expanding sonic capabilities, the band'smoody, spacey and sonically overwhelming sound becomes even more grandiose live. We should know, we've hosted them hereat least a dozen times over the course of their 12-year existence, and it's been a thrill to watch them evolve over the years. Their latest EP, Dopplegangers, was released in November 2016. Containing the same spacey rock that we all know and love, THE LIFE AND TIMES know how to add a little somethin-somethin to captivate with every release. No wonder we keep crawling back for more. Chicago-based shoegazers AURORA L'OREALIS start things off in mega-heavy fashion, making their Bottle debut this very night. Blending a little psychedelia and noise-pop into the mix, the four-piece is poised for big things and are sure to knock you on your ass with their distinctly ecstatic sound.

    The Besnard Lakes

    Pop

The Besnard Lakes raise immediate comparisons to the Arcade Fire, but those are primarily due to accidents of geography and band chemistry: like the Arcade Fire, the Besnard Lakes are from Montreal and led by a married couple. That's largely where the similarities end, because if this Quebecois collective resembles any of its Canadian counterparts, it would be as an unexpectedly effective combination of the Dears' psychedelic pop hooks and the languid space rock ambience of early Broken Social Scene. The aforementioned married couple, singer and guitarist Jace Lasek and singer and bassist Olga Goreas, formed the Besnard Lakes in 2001 as a sideline to Lasek's day job as an in-demand producer at the Montreal recording studio he and Goreas own, Breakglass Studios. (Lasek has produced and engineered records by Wolf Parade, the Dears, Stars, and many other Canadian indie acts.) The band was originally a full-time project, but before it could record its debut album, the other members of the band left. Undaunted, Lasek and Goreas recorded nearly all of 2003's Volume 1 on their own during down time at the studio, then self-released the result. Following the album's glowing reviews, a touring lineup eventually solidified, with guitarists Steve Raegele and Jeremiah Bullied and drummer Kevin Laing. During sessions for the band's second album, Bullied was replaced by Richard White and keyboardist and arranger Nicole Liz??e joined the band. Signing to the venerable dream pop indie label Jagjaguwar, the Besnard Lakes released their second album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, in February 2007 and followed it up with The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night in March 2010. ~ Stewart Mason. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

    The Life and Times

    Alternative Rock

Since August of 2005, The Life and Times has played over 200 shows in support of their debut full-length release Suburban Hymns (DeSoto) on US tours with bands like the Appleseed Cast, Murder By Death, Pelican, Mono, Sparta, Pinback, Engine Down, and William Elliot Whitmore. In June of 2006, they headlined a two week tour of Spain in support of an eponymous split CD/10", both of which with urgent ...post-rockers from Barcelona, Nueva Vulcano (ex-Aina).

The Magician EP (Stiff Slack), their fourth overall release, is a fad-free snapshot of a band that’s constantly morphing from a dragon, to a butterfly, to blinding white light, to a bird, to Godzilla, and back again, often within the space of just one song. RIYLs don't do the band justice from a recorded or live standpoint, but suffice it to say that the sound on the Magician EP puts them in company with artists like Pink Floyd, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Built to Spill and just a pinch of early U2. In October of 2006 they headlined a successful Japanese tour in support of The Magician for Stiff Slack Records (Mercury Program, 31 Knots, Shiner, Mates of State), and then a US/Canadian excursion in November and December of 2006.
