Last year, local bluesy psych-rockers SOFT SPEAKER recorded a new batch of songs with local producer and CAVE "frontman" COOPER CRANE. The fruits of this recording are a new LP titled Turkish Mindbathers, as well as an EP called International Scheiße, Dummkopf! With these new efforts SOFT SPEAKER has broken new ground as a band and the releases are of a mind-folding nature that will surely excite the city's already robust psychedelic rock world. Local favorites RADAR EYES released their debut self-titled LP on HoZac early in 2012 and the effort blisters with their version of heavily layered noisy garage coated in several inches of distortion, reverb, echo and feedback.  In the words of Impose, RADAR EYES “play with a shoegazed despondency... some music sounds like a proper backdrop to the moment the chord attaching you to the outside of your spacecraft snaps and there’s no hope for a change in trajectory unless a distant planet’s gravity reels you in.” They're one of Chicago's best live bands and are surely not to be missed, especially tonight. BITCHIN BAJAS, the side project of aforementioned COOPER CRANE, mines 70s Krautrock to delivers melodic, retro psychedelic ambient jams and they've expanded to a two, sometimes three piece over the last year. Already a prolific project, BITCHIN BAJAS recently released a new 12" EP on Permanent Records this year, a proggy, minimal mind-wipe titled Krausened.

    Under duress from the USM (Unified Society of Milkmen), Joseph Daley, Blair Douglass, Paul Foreman and Nicholas Rocchio shut down their independent milk delivery service in 1929.  A smattering of unsuccessful endeavors followed, until they discovered an undeniable chemistry blending finger-picked guitars with lutes and clarinets.  Although initially less lucrative than the milk business, the quartet, who settled on the name Sanftsprecher (trans. “Soft Speaker”), were championed by Austria’s Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss in 1932 and subsequently enjoyed a period of massive popularity in their newly-adopted home country.  The band split following Dollfuss’s assassination in 1934. Their only official recording, the 78rpm single, I’ll Tend Your Garden, is highly sought after by record collectors.  In 2008, enthusiasts of the band purchased sheet music for a number of unrecorded Sanftsprecher songs that were discovered in Rocchio’s safe deposit box in UniCredit Bankengruppe.  Austria’s Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich has been recording interpretations of these songs and releasing them for the public’s listening pleasure.  Separately, a ramshackle group of Chicago-based musicians has taken it upon themselves to perform and record these songs in a strikingly rudimentary manner with crude electric instruments, much to the dismay of purist fans that prefer the orchestral versions.

And if the album’s final cut says anything about where they’ll go from here, everyone with functioning eardrums has a lot to look forward to from Radar Eyes, truly one of Chicago’s best assemblages of mesmerizing and cohesively unwavering pop brilliance.

    Bitchin Bajas is the solo synthscapes of one Cooper Crain, maybe better known as a member of modern krautrock masters CAVE. With Bitchin Bajas, Crain creates worlds of sound, crafted from analog synthesizer and organ tones, not entirely too far removed from certain elements of Harmonia, Edgar Froese, or Cluster. Crain is definitely bringing a vintage sound to the table here. Clean, distinct arppegiated tones floating and bouncing, drifting and forming zones of their own. This is real deal psychadelia at its finest.
