A night to celebrate 20 years of kranky Records. Tonight we welcome Chicago's DISAPPEARS back to our stage along with LICHENS, the solo project of ROBERT A.A. LOWE, and openers IMPLODES.

Chicago staples DISAPPEARS are returning to play the Bottle for the Kranky Twenty Party and we seriously expect them to blow us away like they did at their record release show for the new LP Era on September 20thAptly named, the new album marks a brilliant new progression of their minimalist sound, in what promises to be their most unique and chilling release to date. After five years as a band, the group is at their most raw, reflective, and powerful. Era is described as being "abrasive, contemplative, and paranoid - it's the sound of the void looking back." We’ve long been a fan of DISAPPEARS’ crunchy, propulsive, and atmospheric wall of sound and know how perfectly engaging they are live. Long-simmering and otherworldly, ROBERT AA LOWE'S multi-formatted LICHENS project is captivating and expansive and each live show is a spectacular unique and individual event that never attempts to duplicate any previous performance. Formerly the bassist in long-gone Chicago outfit 90 DAY MEN and a sometimes-collaborator with OM, LICHENS loops  seemingly endless layers of wordless vocals and avant-folk fingerpicking to create otherworldly sheets of deep-listening drone. IMPLODES have been rocking our brains consistently since their 2009 inception and tonight they return behind the efforts of their new full-length, Recurring Dream, out this past April on - you guessed it - Kranky. The album retains the crushing qualities of their debut record while bringing the distant melodies and submerged rhythms out of the ether and into the light of day. Continuing to explore the deep, dark places of human existence, IMPLODES channel the sounds of earth and space and deep water and simple machines, nudging listeners awake in the most gently brutal way possible.

    Disappears

    Pop

Carving out a space somewhere in the middle of garage-punk snarl, shoegaze haze, and Krautrock grooves, Chicago's Disappears features Brian Case (also of the Ponys and 90 Day Men), Boas members Graeme Gibson and Jonathan van Herik, and Damon Carruesco. The band started when Case's other groups were on hiatus and he was recording demos with Gibson; Gibson brought van Herik into the project, and in turn, van Herik brought Carruesco into the fold. Soon after forming, the band self-released a series of 7" singles with artwork based on Can's album Delay 1968, and made their material available for free on the Internet. Disappears began recording their debut studio album and signed to Touch & Go, appearing at the label's showcase at 2009's South by Southwest Festival, and also playing dates with Tortoise, Deerhunter, and Times New Viking. The band released 100 CD-Rs of Live Over the Rainbo, a live album from the Deerhunter/Times New Viking tour, that was eventually distributed by Plus Tapes and Rococco Records later in 2009. Disappears continued to play more high-profile Chicago shows, including a gig at the Pitchfork Music Festival and a 2009 New Year's Eve show with the Jesus Lizard. Late in the year, the band moved to Kranky Records, who released their official debut album Lux in 2010. The band also recorded a single with Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and the noise duo White/Light. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • Lichens

    Lichens

    Pop

Lichens is the solo improv project of Chicago composer Robert Lowe, previously known as the bassist with art rock combo 90 Day Men. A product of the Kansas City area, Lowe signed on with 90 Day Men in 1996, just prior to their relocation from St. Louis to Chicago; when the group went on hiatus following a European tour supporting its 2004 disc Panda Park, Lowe channeled his energies into his long-simmering solo pursuits, appearing as Lichens at that summer's Arthur magazine-sponsored Million Tongues Festival and self-releasing a limited-edition CD-R, R. Brown. Looping wordless vocals and avant-folk fingerpicking to create otherworldly sheets of deep-listening drone, Lowe soon captivated the attention of Kranky Records co-owner Bruce Adams, and in the autumn of 2005 the label released Lichens' official debut, The Psychic Nature of Being.

    Music

The members of local band Implodes obviously play music together but they have a number of other things in common: Three of them hail from Pittsburgh and three of them work together at Reckless Recordsin Lakeview. Their shared roots and day jobs have helped create a laid-back atmosphere within the band, which is fitting, because atmosphere is key to the sound of Implodes. Check out these local favorites at your favorite local spot, the Bottle.
