Following their well-received 2012 LP, A Different Ship, HERE WE GO MAGIC are releasing their brand new album, Be Small, one week before playing our stage, on Secretly Canadian. Though the last record was produced by RADIOHEAD “sixth member” NIGEL GODRICH, the new album was produced entirely by its two main members, LUKE TEMPLE and MICHAEL BLOCH. Lead by singer/songwriter TEMPLE’s evocative croon, HWGM manage an effortless command of sense, style and sound over a backdrop of guitar pop, psychedelia and assuredly strutting melodies. As Noisey points out in their preview stream, the album contains complex lyrical content without confronting “grandiose troubles” – the record tells a story, something “representative of a greater paradigm shift… What we're combating on the home front is much more insidious and tough to qualify: the loss of presence and clarity.” The layered new album, packed with nuanced and smooth guitar lines, soft vocals and bluesy grooves, is good for dancing or relaxing, though we suggest you dance in the present tonight. BIG THIEF is the music of Brooklyn musician ADRIANNE LENKER. Hitting the road with her friends in HWGM and a group of friendly backing musicians, BIG THIEF is a folk-pop outfit that makes somber and beautiful love songs with just voice and acoustic guitar. On last year’s collection of a-sides, simply titled a-sides, LENKER began implementing some electric guitar and added a male singer to front some songs. BIG THIEF is perfect back-porch and coffee music that’s perfect for either holding or getting over a lover, so don’t forget a handkerchief if you’re the type of person whose eyes occasionally water. JEWEL CASE are making their Empty Bottle debut, and we can't wait to see what sort of deranged plans this new four piece from Chicago, IL has for our ears. Oh wait, we already saw their debut back in May when they were called DEEP BREATH. What a world! The band describes their sound as basement pop or lounge noise, and considering every member of the band is a guitar player at heart, these lads pile guitars on top everything like it’s the dang 90s or something. That said, JEWEL CASE is the sound of four young men who love music too much to recycle the same ideas as most kids with a guitar do, but they’ll never forget what Neil Young said, “Rock and Roll can never die.”

    Here We Go Magic

    Pop

Here We Go Magic's creative center, singer/songwriter Luke Temple, first made his name as a muralist, and the Brooklyn band's music fully fits that pedigree. HWGM's ethereal collage of indie folk, Baroque pop, plains country (and whatever else strikes their fancy) lolls back with dizzyingly hypnotic vocals, generating the feel of a vast, splashed-on panorama. Originally from Boston, Temple bounced nomadically about the country before settling in New York City by the mid-'00s. While the act is cagey about its origin, Here We Go Magic had expanded to a quintet by the 2009 release of its self-titled debut on Western Vinyl. The simlarly psychedelic-pop inflected Pigeons followed in 2010. ~ Jason Thurston, Rovi

Every once in a while, a band comes along that leaves expectations, cynicism, and emotional distance ruined in a heap on the floor. Brooklyn's Big Thief is that band. To hear songwriter Adrianne Lenker's lilting narratives and twisted, fuzzy guitars is to love them. Lenker's lyrical storytelling is equally grounded and autobiographical as it is surreal and cabalistic.

Just ask Big Thief fan Sharon Van Etten. "Some of the most compelling songs I've heard in a long time," says Van Etten. "Driving songs that take you on a real journey, with intelligent stories and twist-and-turn melodies. And fun as hell live."

Today, the band, which includes Buck Meek on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, announces its signing to Saddle Creek. News of their debut album will be forthcoming, as will a slew of performances at this year's SXSW. In February, they embark on a short stint of dates supporting Eleanor Friedberger, followed by a massive national tour with Yuck.
