Indie-pop quartet and LA darlings FAMILY OF THE YEAR make their first trip to the Bottle tonight as they trek around the country in support of this year’s Loma Vista LP, a record filled with sweet California harmonies, stomping rhythms and enough warmth to heat up even the chilliest October nights. Steadily rising with a barrage of releases since their 2009 inception, FOTY combine folk, dance- and psych-rock influences with a sunny west coast backdrop to form a sound that’s entirely their own. They’ve been selected to open for such similar-minded powerhouses as EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, MUMFORD & SONS, GOMEZ and THE ANTLERS and even AEROSMITH’s STEVEN TYLER has praised the band, comparing what he heard to “The Mamas and The Papas on acid.” Speaking of psychedelics, fellow Los Angelites WHITE ARROWS join FOTY for this tour in support of their June release Dry Land Is Not A Myth. Road warriors to their core, WHITE ARROWS play futuristic, deliciously synthetic rock that sounds like its been construed by shamanistic robots – it’s airy, atmospheric, but with a throbbing pulse and fun as hell to dance and thrash around to. Their live show, which employs plenty of fog, lights and visuals for maximum aural and visual sensory overload, is not to be missed and we can’t wait to see what they bring to us this time around. Blasting out of Northampton, MA with edgy dance-rock tendencies and a swagger you don’t want to fuck with, NEW CASSETTES are ear-friendly hook monsters that open up tonight’s eclectic pop extravaganza. Touring along with FAMILY OF THE YEAR and WHITE ARROWS for a handful of dates, NEW CASSETTES are supporting their 2012 release Winterhead, an effort lauded by MTV for it’s combination of “clever dance rock and precocious balladry into a potent pop mix.”

    Family of the Year

    Alternative Rock

The members of Family of the Year have formed unbreakable bonds amongst themselves that come from cohabitating in a run-down house and relying on each other for inspiration and support, which has led to the kind of camaraderie that allows members to finish each other’s sentences. It also doesn’t hurt that frontman Joe Keefe and drummer Sebastian Keefe are real-life siblings.

Family of the Year’s story began in 2009, when Joe assembled a band around an album, Songbook, that he completed while decompressing from a five-year stint with Unbusted, the alt-rock trio he started in Boston with Sebastian that gained some notoriety for its inclusion on the soundtrack to the Farrelly brothers’ film Stuck On You. Instead of relying on the distortion of his past, suddenly pianos, horns, acoustic guitars, and other assorted instrumentation were being used to display a more sophisticated—yet equally as playful—indie-rock sound that brings to mind classic pop bands like The Smiths, The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, and The Go-Betweens.

To say that Family of the Year has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time would be an understatement. In addition to Songbook, the band has issued a pair of EPs on its own Washashore Records imprint – 2009’s Where’s The Sun, 2010’s Through The Trees – in addition to last year’s 2011’s St. Croix.
