At a time when some female singer-songwriters perform as alter egos, ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER is simply, refreshingly herself. Having spent the last decade fronting the indie-rock institution THE FIERY FURNACES (currently on hiatus) with her brother Matthew, ELEANOR emerged as a formidable solo artist in 2011 with her debut album, Last Summer. Her latest album, New View, brings about a new confidence in FRIEDBERGER, both in songwriting and producing. This album is the first time she has given herself a producer credit. Branching out from being stuck in an indie-rock bubble, she worked to define a more classic rock feel on New View, and man, did she succeed. Consequence of Sound said of FRIEDBERGER: “Lately, watching her perform is more like seeing Mick Jagger on stage than a stiff indie songwriter.” Bring on the moves, Eleanor! We’re ready to boogie. New York band ICEWATER joins us this evening. The foursome is actually Eleanor’s backup band, but do not restrict them to that mold. Inspired by GENE CLARK, GRAM PARSONS and NEIL YOUNG, the band creates nostalgic rock that will bring you back to the golden days. COINS is ANGELA MULLENHOUR (guitar) and ELLEN BUNCH (keys). These two describe their sound as dark folk rock, which we feel hits the nail on the head pretty well. With both their vocals and instruments, COINS creates variations of spooky, spacious melodies, odd harmonies and layering of unison.

Occasionally we come across a release that takes the time to mine the spaces between sounds, the gaps between notes, the negative space between reverberations around your headspace or headphones or walls of rooms, down hallways, through concert venues. Coins understands this because the group was borne from these same spaces, founded upon the power of a single Kinks cover between sets for Sybris and Reds and Blue.

Since then, Angela Mullenhour and Ellen Bunch have come together full-time to conjure haunted spectres of late-night beach folk trafficking heavily in what is not said. Their ethereal tiki torching and unfussy instrumentation enables Recital Pressures to glimmer.

Fall asleep on the beach, in the waves, wherever – Coins speaks to you; Coins waits for you.
