Big Wheel and Others is CASS MCCOMBS’ seventh-and-a-half album, one that comprises twenty-two songs and marks a bold new chapter in the myth of this fascinating and singular artist. While “double album” implies bloat, prog, and concept, Big Wheel and Others is a bundle, a bindle, a hay bale, and an oil barrel of songs that brim with MCCOMBS’ gift for evocative storytelling, discerning introspection, and heartrendering melody delivered through a haze of mystery and romance. Some of the genres that are to be found in varying degrees in the songs on this album are: Road songs, rock songs, folk songs, blues songs, country songs, rhythm and blues songs, skronk non-songs, cinema songs, cult songs, poem songs, jams, and ballads – to use however you wish. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome this mythic songwriter to our stage tonight. Baltimore five-piece ARBOURETUM emerged this year with their fifth full-length, Coming out of the Fog via Thrill Jockey, building on their poetic lyrics and slow, heavy building songs that are not for those in search for a quick fix. The band has regained their maximalist tendencies, crafting languid ballads, fuzzed-out burners, and the heavier stuff that’s defined their unique, doom-laden folk-rock.

Cass McCombs is an American musician who has released seven albums and one EP since 2002.

During the 1990’s, McCombs played in countless bands at various DIY spaces in the Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest until he relocated to New York. In 2002, he released his debut, Not The Way EP, on independent Baltimore label Monitor Records. On his first trip to Europe in 2003, he recorded a Peel Session for John Peel, who described McCombs’ music as “unobtrusively brilliant”. In 2003, McCombs released his first album, A, and that year toured with Baltimore’s The Oxes as his backing band. In 2004, he performed at the UK’s All Tomorrow’s Parties and in 2005 released his second album PREfection on Monitor Records in the US and 4AD in Europe. In 2005 he toured with Modest Mouse. In 2007, Dropping the Writ was released on Domino Records and McCombs toured with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Domino Records would release his next four albums: Catacombs (2009), which was voted one of the “50 Top Albums on the Year” by Pitchfork; Wit’s End (2011); Humor Risk (2011), Big Wheel and Others (2013).

In 2012, McCombs toured with John Cale and performed at Occupy Sandy, a benefit for the storm’s victims.

Dave Heumann, a musician with something of a rustic, poetic bent who backed up musicians like Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Cass McCombs, started Arbouretum in the early 2000s. The band was comprised of Heumann's friend Walker David Teret on guitar, ex-Lungfish member Mitchell Feldstein on drums, and Corey Allender on bass. Arbouretum's debut, Long Live the Well-Doer, was released in 2004, and their second album, Rites of Uncovering, came out three years later. The latter was recorded in part by Paul Oldham and, according to Heumann, influenced by the works of writer Paul Bowles. Solidifying themselves with Corey Allender on bass, Daniel Franz on drums, and Steve Strohmeier on guitar, Heumann reentered the studio with Rob Girardi again in 2008 and finished Song of the Pearl in only two months. Thrill Jockey released the record in February of 2009. ~ Margaret Reges & Jason Lymangrover, Rovi
