Coming back to celebrate #EB25 with us is BIG FREEDIA, known as the Queen of Bounce. BIG FREEDIA is a New Orleans-based rapper and ambassador of Bounce music. A vibrant twist on hip-hop, Bounce is characterized by call-and-response lyrics over rapid-fire beats and accelerated booty-shaking. After running the New Orleans club scene for over two decades, BIG FREEDIA is now bringing the Bounce movement world-wide. BIG FREEDIA released her much-anticipated debut LP, Just Be Free. Named one of the ‘best electronic releases of 2014’ by Rolling Stone.  In 2015, BIG FREEDIA penned her first memoir, Big Freedia: God Save the Queen Diva! (Gallery Books/Simon & Schuster) and her second full length album will be released this year! This is BIG FREEDIA's first Empty Bottle apperanced since 2014. Also hitting the stage for this big #EB25 show is Providence, RI political punk quintet DOWNTOWN BOYS, in all their saxophone-laden glory. Cleverly addressing and taking down white supremacy and racism through blistering, bi-lingual punk, DOWNTOWN BOYS are an inimitable, intersectional force to be reckoned with. DJ JILL HOPKINS of Vocalo will be spinning the hits before, in-between and after Freedia & DBs hit the stage. P.A.R.T.Y.

It's round two of our EB25 series, where we bring back bands of Bottle's past for an EB25 series throughout the year. Come one, come all - let's party like it's 1992.

    Big Freedia

    Alternative Rock

Big Freedia (pronounced “Free-da”) is the undisputed “Queen Diva” of Bounce Music, and performs six or more times a week in various venues throughout her home town of New Orleans.

Bounce Music is an original urban music rising up from the challenging yet fun-loving nature of the New Orleans housing projects which dominate the city’s street culture, and Freedia performs a derivative of Bounce reserved for self-proclaimed “Sissies” (a locally used name for biological men with varied and ambiguous sexual identities) that has risen to prominence in recent years and features explicitly gay and cross-dressing musicians and themes. Big Freedia, like other “Sissy” artists, has achieved mainstream success with several New Orleans hit singles such as “Gin in My System” and “Azz Everywhere!” from her albums “An Ha, Oh Yeah” (1999) and “Queen Diva” (2003). Freedia began her musical career almost 15 years ago at the Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, where she was enlisted as choir director from her Sophomore to Senior years. She sees her performance as a Bounce artist as an extension of this work, often interacting in a call and response/teacher and student fashion with her audiences.

While also running a successful decorating business (for which she has counted the Mayor’s office as a client), Freedia has begun traveling outside the city regularly with her dancers, The Divas, and live DJ, Rusty Lazer, playing to sold out audiences from the East to the West Coast alongside (or onstage with) artists such as Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, Monique, The Rapture, 7 Seconds, Snoop Dogg and many more. 2011 has been a banner year for the Queen Diva as she's begun to travel to Europe and beyond, headlining shows in Paris (Social Club), Amsterdam (Valtifest), Milan (Nike Stadium) and London. Freedia will perform at Meredith Festival in Australia this December, followed by a 4 city Austalian tour, then returns to the Big Easy to put the finishing touches on her next album which will include collaborations with New Orleans' most prominent rappers and beatmakers alongside the work of unique producers and performers from around the world.

    Downtown Boys

    Punk

“Those who still defend the supremacy of white male hetero-patriarchy had better watch out.” – Angela Davis, inauguration-day speech, 2017.

Now that the United States has a despot instead of a president, Downtown Boys are that much more driven to use their anger and their joy to drill away at the walls of white supremacy’s brain. Based in Providence, RI, the band released their acclaimed debut album, Full Communism, in 2015, and they have been touring their powerful live show throughout North America and Europe since 2012. They bring an aggressive dissonance to make a harmonious message against the erasure of people of color, queer people, femmes, and those of us who have always been in the center of the pit whether you knew it or not.

The band is currently working with Greg Norman and Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto on their second LP, and they join the countless people filling streets and airports around the country to loudly proclaim #NoBan, #NoRegistry, #FuckWhiteSupremacy.
